| I just passed the 218 test yesterday, so now I am an MCSA !!!
I used A+/Network+ as my elective exam, so I haven't yet taken 216 or 217.
I was told that Microsoft recommends taking 217 first, because 216 is so difficult.
Anyone care to comment on 216 vs. 217:
Which one is harder?
Which one should you take first?
etc. etc.
Thanks in advance!

| I don't think Microsoft makes any recommendations as to what order to take the exams in. It is fairly common for people to avoid 216 as long as they can. 217 requires a good understanding of DNS which is covered in 216, but it is workable without 216 as a prerequisite.
I found 217 to be almost as challenging as 216. At the time I took it each exam was over 60 questions. Both exams have changed at least 2 times and probably three times since I took them early 2002.
I did not pass 216 on my first attempt. But by the same token, I would not have wanted to be taking 216 as my final test for MCSE. I am glad I did the tests in the order I did. Having passed 216 made 217 that much easier to understand. Having passed both of those made 219, 220 and 221 that much easier, plus my study habits were sharpened by not passing 216 the first time out.
Your choice is based on your experience, knowledge and confidence in your study abilities. Either way, 216 will be there whether you do it next or last is up to you.

| I took 217 before 216. But it all depends on what you are comfortable with.
I personally found 217 harder, I had less experiance with AD then I would have liked. I found 216 not as bad as everyone else makes it out to be.

| My mistake. Your question led me to believe that you were inquiring about the advantages of taking 216 or 217 next. | |

| your post was fine (and helpful, I might add!)
it was odduck's post that implied that I should take either 216 or 217 to finish up the MCSA.
But apparently that post has been removed...
(maybe the moderator did it--I could swear it was there! ;-)

| My two cents...I crashed and burned on the 216 section of exam 240 because I didn't know subnetting inside-out.
I have a strong NDS (Novell) background so I am very comfortable with Active Directory. For me, taking 217 first is logical. It's all about preparation..
***KNOW SUBNETING INSIDE-OUT FOR 70-216***
Good luck to all! | |

| Thanks for you input!
The concensus I have been seeing from forums regarding 216 is that it involves a lot of subnetting as you say, and is similar to the CCNA test in that regard.

| Funny, my first time out on 216, subnetting contributed to my downfall, on my second attempt, those questions were nowhere to be found, they must have known I was prepared.
2000trainers. c o m has some good subnetting practice questions online in their CCNA section.

| 2000trainers.com rockz. Well I am all over subnetting. Friday is the day for "The Beast". | |

It was suggested here that 217 be taken before 216, and I think it was good advice.
