An existing Primary DNS Zone installed in a stand-alone server , after installing the same zone as an ADI DNS zone in the only DC, each time the DC restarts DNS service stop, and need to be manually started.

Also after change primary DNS zone installed in stand-alone server to Secondary DNS zone, and restart both servers the same problem arias.
I found that DNS Service configured to start Manually!!!

what could be the reason to change the DNS service from Auto to manual?

Note: in the DC the RIS and DHCP server were installed.
could that be the reason?

Any help please

So your server is hosting more than one copy of the same zone? This is not good. When you set up a primary zone on a standalone then run dcpromo, if you get the DNS not found error, do not let dcpromo configure a new zone, choose the option to configure later. This usually happens when your standalone does not have a FQDN registered in the primary zone that it is hosting and is repaired when running dcpromo as the hostname then has a domain name appended to it and either automatically registers this on the reboot or can be fixed by various means. A DNS server can host multiple zones, not copies of the same one though...

Hi Jeff

The DC in question was already promoted a long time ago, just I liked to install an ADI DNS zone, and change the existing Pri. DNS server to sec. server for the Sec. zone, just as a study lab.

I have deleted the existed Pri. DNS server instance from DNS snap-in in the DC.

all works OK, though I have two queries:
1- How I can enforce replication from the existed Pri. DNS server to the ADI zone, should I create a Sec. Zone first and after replication change both zones one to ADI and the other to Sec.

2-Why DNS service changed to start Manually instead of Automatically in the DC.

Thanks

1 - What you suggest sound like it would work.

2 - Have you tried to change the service from manual to automatic in services? Make sure to review the event logs to get more insight.

Just make sure to not have conflicting zone roles on the same server.
