Here is today's Question:
You are the administrator of a Windows 2000 domain. The domain is in native mode. The domain contains 15 Windows 2000 Server computers that are functioning as domain controllers and 1,500 Windows NT Workstation client computers. During a power outage, the first domain controller that you installed suffers a catastrophic hardware failure and will not restart. After the power outage, users report that password changes do not take effect for several hours. In addition, users are not able to log on or connect to resources by using their new passwords.
What should you do to correct this problem?
A. Using the Ntdsutil utility, connect to another domain controller and transfer the PDC emulator role.
B. Using the Ntdsutil utility, connect to another domain controller and seize the PDC emulator role.
C. Using the Ntdsutil utility, connect to another domain controller and transfer the domain naming master role.

Each domain in the forest must have one domain controller that acts as the PDC emulator. If the domain contains computers that are not running Windows 2000 client software, or if it contains domain controllers running Windows NT, the PDC emulator processes password changes and replicates updates to the backup domain controllers running Windows NT.
In a Windows 2000 domain in native mode, the PDC emulator receives preferential replication of password changes that are performed by other domain controllers in the domain. If a password was recently changed, that change takes time to replicate to every domain controller in the domain. If a logon authentication fails at another domain controller because of a bad password, that domain controller will forward the authentication request to the PDC emulator before it rejects the logon request. | |

| This is the kind of question that throws me for a loop!
Connect from what? and what about the computer that holds the forest root suddenly being unavailable? who then holds the schema or domain naming roles?
how would seizing the pdc emulator role from another computer in the same domain make any difference? its already there, right? | |

| You're trying to make the question more complicated than it really is. Don't read more things into it, or you'll just end up confusing yourself. Who really cares about the Domain Naming Master or Schema Master in this question? I sure dont since it's not relevent. All you need to know is that since users are having problems with passwords the fault lies in the PDC emulator because it's job is to take care of password changes.
Anyways, answer is 100% B. | |

The Answer was B, good Job everyone!
The PDC emulator role is assigned to a Win2000 DC in a mixed or native mode domain. In mixed mode domains, the PDC emulator allows replication between Win2000 and NT 4.0 servers, as well as allowing NT 4.0 clients to write to the directory database. The failed DC (that was acting as the PDC emulator) is the cause of the problems in this scenario, so hop on a functional DC and seize the PDC emulator role. |
