| Hey All,
I have setup a 'trial' domain at work and am slowly rolling people into the system. A lot of things have gone to plan, but I have some issues which I am having problems resolving. Any help would be much appreciated
1) XP Logon. Why is it so dang slow? All of the Wk2 boxes hop onto the domain at speeds that cannot be distinguished from a local logon.
2) Is there a way to elevate user privileges so they can handle install like situations (each sales guy has a database that the need to periodically change on their system by unzipping a new one into the directory, which overwrites the old. The ZIP program fails under regular domain user privledges)? Will do some more research... It is probably obvious...
Excuse me while I ice down the bruises on my forehead from banging it against the wall. The new sales guys at work are driving me up the wall, it is like they think that the one man IT dept. is their slave . Aspirin anyone?
Much thanks in advance,

| Found the solution to the slow logon / browse issue
Login before: 3 minutes
Login after: 10 seconds
1) Set the client's primary DNS server as the local DNS server (it was set as the secondary, didn't think that this would cause and issue. 2K loved it just fine)
2) TCP/IP > advaned tab > DNS > uncheck register this connection's address in DNS
It seems wierd how only the XP boxes had issues with this. You would think that interoprability problems with 2K / XP would me very minimal.
Oh well... Hope this help someone
As for the installs it looks like I might have to walk over and use 'runas' for the sales guys.

For this problem, I am assuming that you are running XP Pro... If the sales person is the only one uses the PC, you can add his domain account to the local workstation administrators group account or create special local workstation group and assign his domain account into it. Good luck.

| Hey Twister,
Thanks for the info! It is funny how something so obvious can elude my mind. MS has warped my small mind to believe that the universe can be controlled though the AD Users and Computer MSC
It is so funny how hard I have worked to learn only to realize that things don’t quite go as planned at times or as smoothly as MS claims they should.
However, I feel privileged that through everyday mayhem (I mean experience….) I can truly learn the ins and outs of systems. |
