Hello all,

I have a single DC running Win2k Active directory. DNS was installed as an AD integrated- forward lookup zone, the HDD crashed and the DNS records are gone (forward lookup zone was deleted), I have tried to recreate the zone but when I do that, the new zone created does not contain the SRV RR records:
_msdcs
_sites
_tcp
_udp

Since these SRV records are missing, the client machines can not connect to the domain and I can not add a second DC to the AD domain. I have tried reinstalling the DNS service (add/remove Windows components & restarting) but when I create the new zone I encounter the same results. I have tried to remove the server from AD (DCPROMO) but I get an error message that the Domain controller can not be contacted (obviously because there are no SRV records). Anyone have an idea? I really don't want to have to rebuild the whole domain. PLEASE HELP!! Email me at:

Thanks. Seb.

I take it there was no backup for this DC? Also, I assume that this was the only DC in the domain, huh? That's two big problems with any network... let's all learn from this one.

Can you install DNS on another DC and see if your records get recreated?

DNS is the corner stone of all things AD, so if it really went down as hard as you described, you may well have to recreate the domain. This time, use at least two DCs.

Also, check out the resource kit utilities, there might be something that can help there...

The following contains info on manually re-creating DNS zones:

Good luck!

Hey Zaraspook, those are great links you have been posting. Thanks, great contribution!

We should make a collection of those and post them online...

Thanks guys, This is basically how I solved the problem:

1) Make sure the zone is Dynamic update enabled.
2) Make sure the DC has the proper Primary DNS Suffix.
3) Do a "net stop netlogon" and "net start netlogon" to force dc to reregister SRV records. Do a dcdiag on the DC after to check everything is

I'll be sure to make an image of the DC, I've already started to build a .NET RC1 DC.

THanks for the help.

I was in the situation once!
That's because the DC cant find DNS server, just make sure that your DNS in you TCPIP setting point to its IP address!

I am slowly copying these links to a file I plan to organize and burn onto CD one day, so that I may carry them around with the rest of my junk.

I'll let you know when I get around to it.

I'd like to make a zaraspook page on my site with your links in it. If you are interested, let me know. I think that it would be a great resource for all of us.

It's a work in progress, but I'll let you know when I'm finished. Thanks for the offer!

You're very welcome As I said, it is too good of a resource to let it disappear and not be available to all students out there!
