Hey gomcse,

I would say your best bet would be the MS books. Although dry at times (ok, all the time) they are packed with solid information. Sybex is a lot easier to read, but they seem to leave out some info.

I've heard very good reviews on the MS Press Study Guides, except for the 216 Network Infrastructure Study Guide. I hear it has much less detail than the others in the series with far fewer pages also.

I've also heard that the Sybex Study Guide for 216 is pretty good, but the other W2k Sybex Study Guides are somewhat lacking. Maybe you could use both of them together?

I used the Syngress/Osborne Study Guide by Thom and Deb Shinder. It was okay, but a couple of the chapters, (RRAS and WINS), were poorly written. I also used both the 216 and 221 LearnKey W2k CD series to prepare. Now I found the LearnKey's to be very excellent. I also supplemented with tons of TechNet stuff and various other articles I found with the help of my good buddy -- Mr. Google.

I hear also the NewRider Study Guides are pretty good too. Oh and by the way, check out bookpool.com for the best prices on study guides.

Be on notice though, you'll have to do plenty of lab practice and exercises if you expect to conquer the beast! Best of luck!

I always use at least 2 books - for this one I doubled the MS Press Training Kit with the 216 for Dummies book. Step through as many of the labs as your hardware will allow in whichever book you decide to go with. I also have the Sybex books but because I was so dissappointed in the quality of the 210 and 215, I never even considered looking at it for the 216.

Oh and whichever you go with be sure to check the publisher's website for the books corrections. MS is know to have many corrections - many have been fixed if you get a second edition copy.

I didn't rate the MSPress book for 216 at all. Not enough information for the topics covered. It was lacking in depth and detail.

As freek pointed out, the networking guide in the Windows 2000 resource kit is fantastic. One long read but everything you need to know to pass 216 is in there and then some.

2 or more books is too expensive for me, I get paid 60USD/month (a good rate in Vietnam) but that can buy a original book, so I have to buy "copy book" (hehe no copyright at all in VN) and use Ebook!
For me MS Press and W2k Resource kit is a great help!

i read sybex and new riders but what really helped me was the Mike Meyers certifcation passport (rory McCAW) { www.osborne.com},i was on trip to north america and find it by accident in chapters in toronto and nobles in new york(never heard about it on this forum) it is canadian

you have to practice a lot too but it is not as hard as i thought

I am using New Riders, Osborne, MS-Press, and the Server resource kit from technet. I am taking no chances with this one?

Good luck Cyber Dude

It is worth the wait to study things thoroughly. Also, it’s great to get the perspective of different authors.

Plus it helps to settle the nerves

sorry pal, but what you are asking is to send you some copyrighted material, and that is against the rule of this forum...

That's OK, I'll try find out somewhere else. We, in Vietnam, dont have any copyright barrier :-D

Hey Cyber, out of the three, New-Riders, Osborne, and MS-Press, it would be very interesting to note, which you consider the better, the best! We already know that the Server Resource Kit is the "King Daddy Rabbit", and luckily now for us, a free resource posted up on Microsoft's website. But, out of the three that you mentioned, which do you consider overall the hands down winner! I would put more stock in anything you'd have to say, than any of those dime a dozen reviewers that are paid to write reviews for the likes of lame MCP Magazine, anyday of the week and twice on Sundays!

Hi Slinky, it was a slip of the old finger, he, he....

Zaraspook: I started with NR and have actually read it three times now, and done all the labs about the same. The Osborne one came just after I got the M$ on CD. The Osborne is easier to read than the other two, and covers certain aspects far better than that of the NR. Saying that though, the NR wins in other parts. To be honest about the three though, if you amalgamated the Osborne and NR, you would have a good runner for the M$. What I do not like about the NR is that they reference only a few command line utilities, and the Osborne covers more. I think M$ covers everything in the same detail subject after subject.

For test engine wise, I do like the NR. I have not yet used the Osborne though. The M$ are sort of average.

I believe I will still leave the 216 until last, so that I can pass the 218, 270, 217 and 220 without having to maybe remember a 216 asskicking fail. I hope to pass it first time, but everyone does call it the beast.

Guyda, have a search for actual ebook companies. You can usually buy an ebook for a few pounds. Search on ebay as well, which is where I obtained my Osborne book.
