And today's poser is ....

Q17. A domain controller on the network has experienced a system failure and now will not boot properly. Alison attempts to boot the domain controller using the Recovery Console so she can repair the system. After starting the computer, she attempts to access the Recovery Console and is asked for the administrator password. She enters the password that she normally uses for administrative access. However she is unable to access the Recovery Console. What is the most likely reason for this?

A. The Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) has not been updated recently. Therefore when performing the repair the passwords for all of the user accounts were reset to the same values as when the ERD was last updated.

B. Alison is not a member of the Enterprise Administrators group. You must be a member of the Enterprise Administrators group to access the Recovery Console.

C. The policy specified for the Domain Controllers Organizational Unit does not allow users to Log On Locally to the computer.

D. Alison entered her domain password rather than the password for the Recovery Console. The password for the Recovery Console is not stored in Active Directory but rather in the Security Accounts Manager.

Good Luck .... see you tomorrow for the answer!!

And the answer is ....

Correct Answer: D

When you promote a Windows 2000 Server-based computer to a domain controller, you are prompted to type a Directory Service Restore Mode Administrator password. This password is also used by Recovery Console, and is separate from the Administrator password that is stored in Active Directory after a completed promotion. To access the Recovery Console, you must use this password to log on to the system. Because Active Directory is not available when booting into the Recovery Console, passwords for accounts that have administrative priviledges for the domain will not work.
