| Had to drive 75 plus miles through a driving rain storm and then drive back through it again on the return home, but coming back with a pass made it all worthwhile!
I found the 217 exam to be much more challenging than the 218, but still considerably easier than the 216. The 216 just covers a lot more ground and the questions are by far the toughest. Overall, I thought it was a very fair exam and I enjoyed it! Let me tell you, it really feels nice to finally put the last of the four core exams behind me.
For those of you still preparing for the exam, know your GPOs, GPO filtering, GPO processing, access control entries, delegating authority, publishing and assigning MSIs and ZAPs, logon and startup scripts, roaming user profiles and folder redirection, DNS, RIS, Intrasite/Intersite replication, global catalog placement, seizing and transferring FSMO roles, optimizing Active Directory, groups, OU properties & policy inheritance, using administrative templates, account and password policies, auditing, and security policies. Also, make sure you no the Secedit command, the NTDSUTIL utility, and using the Replication Monitor really well.
Finally, let me say a big THANK YOU to everyone for all your help! It truly is appreciated!

| A hearty congratulations and well done on the core. Wow...drive 75 miles just to take a test? That's something. | |

| Well done Zaraspook! | |

| Congrats! You should be getting close. What's left? | |

| Thanks for your comments everyone!
Jeff, I'll do the 219 next then the 221. After I finish, I'll do the 220 too for good measure. Security is getting bigger and more important these days and it's important to have a good grounding in it. Besides, I already have all the prep material for it, so I may as well.
Started to schedule the 219 yesterday also, but chickened out at the last minute. Hindsight is 20/20, I realize now I should have scheduled both. Oh well, I'll drive down and go take it as soon as I get another break in the action.
Hows your Cisco stuff coming? Making progress?
| jeff_j_black 2002-07-14, 10:58 am |
| Progressing very well. I know time is a difficulty for you. Maybe take two designs in one trip?
Use this for 219:Chapter 9 Deployment Planning Guide
For 221 I recommend that you get a good text for it as the exam introduces new material relating to networking situation in a terminal/server type environment and internetworking with other platforms, that are covered in the exam. And of course for a tune up:
TechSkills.com
uCertify.com
Examsimulators.com
For free trial practice on both.

| Congratulations, I thought that 217 was a tough exam as well, on par with 216 but I wouldn't say it was easier though.
Pity about the long drive but it must have been a pleasure driving back knowing you passed regardless of the weather.
Glad you aced it.

| Thanks Lexy! I didn't feel the exam was as difficult as 216. Although most questions had diagrams, the text portions didn't seem to be as long and also seemed to be a little more direct. Or, maybe having a few exams under my belt now, I'm just getting better at finding the pertinent information. Anyway, thanks again, and best of luck to you with the 218!
PS: The pass did make the drive home a lot easier despite all the rain!

| Good luck on 219, let me know what it's like as that is my last exam after 218 for my MCSE update then it's on to all things Cisco but that might change as I want to do 270 (XP) as I have most of the revision material and it look quite different from W2K.
Not having a break then? My 218 revision starts tomorrow after having a weeks break.

I am re-reading the Chapter 9 Deployment Planning Guide today that Jeff referenced in his earlier post. Got to keep this stuff fresh! I'll take a little break when I finish the 219.
You'll find the 218 revision fun. It covers basically everything you have already covered with an emphasis on troubleshooting. Relax and enjoy this one as it is not so tough!

| can i have some of that luck 2? what was your secret to your success..... | |
| Zaraspook 2002-07-14, 6:41 pm |
| No secret, really, other than lots of study, lots of hands on practice, and of course, the tremendously appreciated help and support from the fellow members of the forum.
Best of luck on your exams! Are you planning on taking this one soon?

| Way to go Zaraspook! You are moving right along. Wish I could say the same, as I bombed this exam on Thursday. I am still debating whether to contiunue forward. Your synopsis of the exam what dead on. I saw everything that you saw in the exam, but with one major difference. You passed and I didn't. LOL Oh well. If I decide to finish my MCSE, I might be troubling you for some help with the 217. Best of luck with your future exams. | |

| Thanks Rush I appreciate it very much!
Now you can't let one little minor set back destroy the mission. I've paid attention to your participation on this forum and it's obvious you have the talent required to learn this stuff, therefore, I would be remiss if I didn't encourage you to continue with your mission. You have just come to far to give up now! Remember, nothing worthwhile comes easy; you just have to be willing to pay the price! Just two more cores and you know it will be all downhill from there.
I know if I failed one I would feel very dejected too, so I know how you feel. You just need to take a few days off to get your mind off of it so that you can come back strong. As you said in your post: "I saw everything that you saw in the exam." Therefore, let that be your road map. Finally, let me recommend that you read the Chapter 9 Deployment Planning Guide that Jeff suggested I read today in his earlier post. It will help give you the big overall picture of how everything fits together in an Active Directory environment and, therefore, make everything easier to understand.
If you need any help with anything, all you have to do is ask; I'll be happy to. Thanks again and best of luck to you!

| Rush we're here to help, concepts, questions etc. The moderators, many of the posters, especially Zaraspook, really know their stuff. So feel free to work it out here. The faster you get back to the booth, (properly prepared of course) the better you'll feel. I failed 216 on my first attempt and really didn't let it get to me, just re-tooled with the knowledge that I would have to drill down on 2-3 subjects and really learn them. That's the best advice I have for you right now: retools on the three biggest things you know you need to focus on and go take it again, soon. Good luck! Hope we can help. | |

| Congrats on the pass Zaraspook.. but I thought that the 217 is a fair exam.. it asked on concepts you could gain from the MOC & the MS Press books.. not like the 216 which requires you to get a lot of hands on.. anyways.. congratulations on a job well done.. good luck for your 219, 221 & 220.. | |

Thanks to you both Zaraspook and Jeff. I have decided to trudge on with the MCSE. I will definitely be asking for lots of help with these last couple exams. Thanks for the inspirational "pep-talks".

| Zara, congrats on the pass! I know just how you feel. I drive 100 miles each way to take my exams. I have to plan my test times according to the Dallas, TX traffic. I like to leave home early and get there early enough to go over some last minute notes.
As far as 219, piece of cake! Good luck!

Best of luck in the second round Rush and Pav! Victory is at hand! I can smell it!
