ok here's the deal
I have about 150 users and I want to change their profiles to point to a network fileserver so they can have their home folders and profile info their and I don't want to change the path manually under active dir. users and groups (that'd take way too long) any ideas about a script that would do this for me or a command line string

basically I want everyone's info to be something like this
profile path= \\fileserv1\profile\%username%

my docs redirected to \\fileserv1\home\%username%

I could use the net use command in a script but then I would still have to edit every user manually and I want to avoid that as best as I can

thanks in advance

p.s. all computers are running either 2000 pro or server

of secondary importance I would also like to set the proxy server settings at the same time I do this

Through group policy and folder redirection, you can assign user's 'my documents' to a network share. You can use roaming profiles as well. No script needed.

I figured it out.
my teacher said I would have to write a perl script but under software settings or something like that I could set the proxy server for all users that were logged into the domain and redirect the my docs folder to the fileserver without changing the profiles one by one (this stuff never came up in class?)

They never taught you how to redirect a folder,,jesus,,what class did you go to.

Active directory folder redirection is a steal for administrators. Ask for your money back or buy a book relating or pertaining to Active Directory configuration and installation as this is a group policy basic that is covered in most literature covering the subject.

a perl script? WTF?

For scripting needs, check out cwashington.netreach.net the guy sure knows his stuff.

And yes, what you are looking for could be taken care of with folder redirection. ALthough I still would go for a VB script in this case...

it wasn't as hard as I thought it was, but this is my first real project and sometimes these things get forgotten. what I origionall wanted to do was
under active dir users R-click on user and edit the profile so they would all have roaming profiles (stored on the fileserver)
and their my docs folder on the same machine in a different share. the whole problem is the school is having me and another student do the whole thing from scratch
(used to be one big workgroup with no firewall or even A-V software until we got the nimda virus) so they got me and the other guy (this is also his first project) to setup the whole deal, put the wires in the walls, install the keystone jacks, upgrade from 10Mbps hubs to 100 switches.
a total do-over for the network and problems vet admins think are simple we have never run into (once we figure em out of course they're simple but until then how can ya know there is no way they can teach you everything that can go wrong in a class. no matter how good the instructor is, he can only teach you how to break it down and figure it out freak can back me up on this, you can't hold the students hand or they'll never learn anything on their onwn)

all in all it's running pretty smoothly considering the 2 guys in charge have no networking experience to speak of

what we ended up doing was redirecting the my docs with a group policy, setting the proxy settings with a policy, and also the profile is kept on the fileserver just like we wanted so everything worked out

We all have to learn at some stage, being beginners or administrators with years of experience (ehem) but the point was, what you were trying to achieve was a basic concept of active directory and any instructor would know this and be able to explain if you asked the question. Don't they do question and answer sessions in MOC courses anymore?

Freak, scripting to solve the solution you work the impossible, yoda of the IT world.

Investigate the mentioned website, I will.
