| And today's poser is ....
Q61. When you attempt to recover a damaged or corrupt Ntds.dit database, either from backups or by means of the Esentutl.exe tool, you may receive the following error message when you restart your system:
Directory Services could not start because of the following error: The system cannot find the file specified. Error status: 0xc000000f. Please click Ok to shutdown this system and reboot into Directory Services Restore Mode, check the event log for more detail information.
When the system is in Directory Services Restore mode, the Directory Services log displays the following two error messages:
Event ID: 1168
Source: NTDS General
Category: Internal Processing
Description: Error -1811(fffff8ed) has occurred (Internal ID 404ab). Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.
Event ID: 1003
Source: NTDS General
Category: Internal Processing
Description: The Windows Directory Services database cannot be initialized and returned error -1811. Unrecoverable error, the directory can't continue.
What is the most likely cause of this error message? (Choose all that apply)
A. Your system's attempt to recover a domain controller's copy of the Active Directory database deleted the Ntds.dit file.
B. Your system's attempt to recover a domain controller's copy of the Active Directory database renamed the Ntds.dit file.
C. Your system's attempt to recover a domain controller's copy of the Active Directory database copied the Ntds.dit file to the wrong directory.
D. Your system's attempt to recover a domain controller's copy of the Active Directory database renamed the C:\Winnt\Ntds folder.
Good Luck .... see you tomorrow for the answer!! | |

And the answer is ....
Correct Answers: A and C
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because your system's attempt to recover a domain controller's copy of the Active Directory database either deleted the Ntds.dit file or copied it to the wrong directory.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, you must restart your system in Directory Services Repair mode, and then perform one of the following two steps:
Use Windows Explorer to search for the Ntds.dit file, and then move it to the right location.
-or-
If your search is unsuccessful, use your backup system to restore the Ntds.dit file to the right location.
MORE INFORMATION
When you repair the Active Directory database with the Esentutl.exe utility, you must ensure that only the database log files are moved or deleted after the repair is complete. The Ntds.dit file must not be deleted or moved. This file must remain in the same location where it had been installed, which, by default, is in the C:\Winnt\Ntds folder. |
