me? I dunno...

Went in and did this test the other day, or more like it, it did me.

Anyone who is considering skipping the 70-216 to do this one first had better know their DNS as good as if they had already done 216, in fact they would probably want to know everything from 216 as if they had already done 216

Whether you like Bill Gates or not, I'm guessing he knows that 216 comes before 217. He probably has it set up that way for a reason.

From now on I go by the numbers!

I think I could have passed this test, but I also have a weakness in the area of security templates, once the test figured out these two areas of weakness (and it didn't take long) it just slammed me with dns and security template questions the rest of the way through. I guess in one sense it is good that there is no doubt or missunderstanding in my mind whatsoever as to what the problem is, ablsolutely no need to make inquiries as to what my weak areas are, it was just kind of humilitating that the test seemed to take glee in asking things I didn't know.

I'm guessing the rationalization is that a minimum level must be reached in ALL areas in order to proceed. Not having had the opportunity to do net+, and having been persuaded to skip 216 for 217, I didn't have things that MS figured I should. Oh well, live and learn...

Don't feel bad it got me too last monday. Since you have already started studying for this one I would just try again after working on your weak points. Actually I am trying again in two weeks and I'm preparing for 43 questions instead of the 63 this time and clamping down on replication. Hopefully both of us will have better luck next time!!

217 is a very hard exam. Don't beat yourself up over this one at all.

Active directory is very similar to learning to play an instrument, it's not something you will ever master, just something that you get better with over time.

As it is the new concept in Windows 2000 they will test your knowledge to the extreme. I thought that this was harder than the 216 exam.

Learn everything you can then learn more for 219 as this is the real test for the MCSE as far as I'm concerned. Both will make you sweat for the duration of the exam.

Even though I’ve finished the MCSE I am still reading as much as I can about active directory as the subject is vast and you will need to know as much as you can.

Good luck for the next attempt but don’t give up.

Yeah, I was one of the dumb ones who took 216 twice before taking 217. It sure paid off. Good advice 'me? I dunno...'.

You can get some pretty good follow up articles on Cramsession covering DNS, in their 'articles' section. Keep plugging, I bet you will only have to take 216 one time!!!

Actually, I have come much too far to even consider stoping now, (or even slowing down) this is just a minor bump. It's just too bad that I miss my first MS exam on an avoidable thing.

It wasn't that long ago that I shook my head and wondered how I was ever going to figure out NTFS permissions now I'm on the verge of beginning to examine the particulars of packet switching?

Today's overwhelming challenge seems to be more rapidly converting to tomorrow's familiar and easily solved.

That's the spirit? Hey, some of the stuff I've done in the lab has been disasterous. Your questions come from the fact that you are working with the product, hands on. This is a great qualifier. Just make sure to develop a means to organize and document you experience.

Do not see it as a set back.

Learn from the experience as you now know what to expect from the exam and the level of difficulty that you will face.

Hands on experience is the key and read related topics to compliment your learning. Brush up on key areas that you struggled with in the exam or you feel that you could have known more about.

Then success follows. When you pass, you will know more than you did for the last exam and be better off because of it.

I did 210 then 215 then failed 217 then took 217 again and passed then took 218 and went back to 216 then 219 and 221.

It is my opinion that 217 is equally as much of a beast as 216 and those that fail 217 usually do pass 216 on the first go. I think MS plans for every candidate to fail at least one core exam at least once All part of their ma$ter plan (wha ha ha)

Hang in there and when you prep for 216, plan on opening that 221 book too. You'll find more help by looking in the 219 book while prepping for 217 as well.

You mentioned that you don't have N+. I don't know what your background is in networking, but I would strongly urge that a Microsoft candidate first get grounded in networking through either N+, Cisco, or other means. I could not imagine studying the Microsoft track without a foundation in networking.
