Why is DCPROMO faster at installing when you choose the defaults, than when you choose to customise the install?

Answer at the weekend.

Man, your questions are always a bag of tricks. Makes me want to run home right now and run DCPROMO over and over again. Best guess right now is that DCPROMO would have to locate authoritative DNS, query for existing administrator credentials and examine storage issues. I say this because the default would be new, new, new and default file locations, so DCPROMO could know these things are okay prior to presenting options.

Sorry Jeff, but it is simpler than that. This is a question I got today from my AD Guru Director. It had me stumped as well, but it is another little snagit of info though.

Because the defaults are guaranteed to be valid. When you customize, the OS has to check to see whether your choices are acceptable.

Tech I already put that out.

OK Jeff, just to relieve you from your frustration.

This Q is all about the .dit file.

If you choose all the defaults, the .dit file on the CD is copied to the HD.

If on the other hand, you choose to customize, then DCPROMO has to create a new .dit file according to your customization.

Ever since you met up with this AD guru, you've been driving the rest of us crazy. Does this guy sit in a cave contemplating the Administrative Templates?

He has now gone off 2K AD, and is .Net crazy, as you can now partition the directory. Unfortunately it is still not as flexible as NDS.

Jeff, have you cleared out your PM's yet mate?

I think so...

I always delete the ones I recieve, but apparantly it caches the ones you send for tracking. That was all threre was in there. Give it a shot.

You dont have to manually configure DNS and DHCP, dcpromo will do all that for you. I think!!!

DCPROMO will prompt you to configure DNS and you can select option to configure later, but does nothing for DHCP.

NDS still is a superb directory service.

Superb questions regarding Active Directory, keep it going as some of them are superb!
