I've searched and searched and read through just about everything that I have, but I can't find anything that says how the site connection object schedule interacts with the site link schedule. For example I created a site link called blah-blah and scheduled replication to occur Sat-Sun 12A-6A and an interval of 60 min. I also set the site object to have the conneciton available twice per hour, every day, all the time but it seems to replicate every 30 min without regards to the site link schedule. If I set the object to four times per hour then it does it every 15 minutes. So whats going on here? I was under the impression that the site link has to be available first for the connection to use it.

I guess it doesn't help when the MCSE Training kit book isn't correct, or so I believe. It tells you how to configure the site link replication frequency but the way it tells you to get to that figure is incorrect. The figure that it shows is for the connection object and not the site link. I'm on page 167 figure 6-6 for those that care to take a look.

I am not sure if this answers your question (it’s all rather confusing, isn’t it!) – but let’s make a couple of things clear.

First – when we get down to the nuts and bolts of replication, there are two things we need to watch, schedule wise. This first is the connection object. The connection objects deals with the AVAILABILITY of the replication event that will take place.

As example would be – you tell a connection object to replicate between noon and three PM every day. Think of this as a “windows of opportunity”.

Then we have site links, and these deal with the FREQUENCY of the replication event. It is the site link that actually moves the data, if you want to think of it that way. It is the site link that allows the pull to take place.

For instance – you can have availability of half and hour a day (that’s your window of opportunity).

You can have a frequency of once an hour for five minutes. However, if that frequency does not coincide with the availability window – no replication will take place. Also, depending on how these two mesh up – replication might appear to take place after only fifteen minutes of the availability window – when in fact, it ran right on schedule as far as frequency goes.

I read somewhere (but cannot find the link) that this type of replication will NEVER occur more than every fifteen minutes between sites. Despite what the docs say. I hope I remember that right. The box allows you to set the thing down to a minute – but it won’t kick off more frequently than fifteen minutes.

Hope this helps a bit.

I figured out how it works now. I deleted the manual connections and let the KCC add them and I could see how it changes the site connection availability according to the replication schedule. For example if you make replication available between 12a-6a with an interval of every 2 hours, the the site connection will be available at 12a, 2a, and 4a with a once per hour availability.

Thats why its not recommended to make changes to the automatic connection. You should let the KCC add/change connections as necessary.

Thanks for the reply.
