I believe so because there are no PDCs in native 2K.

You will always have a PDC Emulator wether you are in native or mixed mode

I stand corrected.

w2k Client Software - it's basically a software extension that allows Win9x and NT 4.0 to take advantage of features in Active Directory.

There's info on Microsoft's web site:

Just to clarify for everyone,

The PDC emulator performs these roles:

  • Acts as PDC for existing NT 4 BDC's
  • Manages password changes from computers running NT, 95 / 98
  • Minimises relication latency for password changes
  • Synchronizes the time on all domain controllers
  • Prevent possibilities of overwriting GPO's

When the domain is NATIVE, then the PDC emulator still exists, but no longer acts as a PDC to other BDC's. In otherwords, no NT 4 domain controlers can exist in NATIVE mode.

Also, the PDC emulator is installed on the first domain controller created in the domain. Although this can be moved by going to 'Operations Masters' in AD Users & Computers.

so after you change the domain to native, the pdc emulator is still running, providing the another services you listed, except the posibilities to add nt4 domains to the newtork. no?

You've got it, but a better way to think of the PDC emulator is that it is one of 5 Operations Master roles:

  • Schema Master
  • Domain Naming Master
  • PDC Emulator
  • RID Master
  • Infrastructure Master

The first two roles are forest roles, and there is only one Schema Master and Domain Naming Master per forest.

The other roles are per domain roles, so each domain will have a PDC emulator, RID Master, and Infrastructure Master.

The point I'm trying to make is that a lot of people think of the PDC Emulator as a unique service for mixed mode domains only. It's not, because even in Native Mode it will perform the other services I listed in my previous post.
