Hello,

I need to setup a new domain.
The server is Windows 2000 server,
workstations are windows Pro.
A router is gateway and has DHCP enabled
a DSL line.

I would like to know if we need to setup DNS on the server? How many DNS servers can we setup in one domain?

Thanks for all.

In order to have a domain, DNS is a requirment. Whether it be a Windows 2000 Server based DNS or BIND, you have to have one. No getting around it.

If you only have one site, then you should have two for fault tolerance, but that is not a requirment. If you have multiple sites, then I would implement one in each to decrease query response time. Use Active Directory zones to minimize zone transfer traffic.

Hope that helps.

Does BIND support SRV records?

Version 4.9.6. will give you SRV record support required for Active Directory.

Windows 2000 network is based on directory structured, similar to the DIRECTORY Services from NOVELL, but here is called Microsoft Active Directory.

Active directory NEEDs a DNS to locate resources, name resolution and objects, etc.

Windows 2000 AD can`t run without a properly DNS service. DNS service is installed by AD Wizard if you don`t have one.

Remember to add Reverse Lookup zones because AD Wizard don`t create this zone and is important for your enviroment.

Remember to setup the NTFS on your hard disk. AD need NTFS. AD is installed using the wizard or running DCPROMO.

You need to remove the DHCP service on your gateway, because you need to provide to clients the DNS of your server, instead of the DNS that provide the Gateway (itself)

Use DHCP to provide to all win2k clients the properly ip address/ subnet, YOUR dns, etc.

Later, on your dns, configure a Forwarder to your Gateway.

Your gateway make queries to the ISP dns.
So the name resolution must be configured on this way:

client conmputers have your Internal dns configured as DNS server. When a client try to resolve using your DNS, the DNS search on their ZONE for this records. If this records exists, is provided to your clients... if not... your DNS make a query to your gateway that use a ISP DNS for name resolution.

You need to use your INTERNAL DNS on all your internal clients, instead of the DNS provided by your gateway!!!

The dhcp you must use on your network, can provide the scope options to clients, providing the correct gateway address too!!!

and you can create clases, so you are able to kill gateway address to some computers, and only the computers that receive the correct gateway are able to browse the internet.........
