Hi,

Here are two quick questions I have.

How do you modify the location of the shared system volume created during the installation of Active Directory?

My guesses would be either some kind of registry modification or to remove and reinstall Active Directory.

My second question is: If a site link has more than two sites, all of the sites in the site link are connected in what topology?

A: A NxN fully connected star topology.
B: A 1xN fully connected mesh topology.
C: A NxN fully connected mesh topology.
D: A Nx1 fully connected bus topology.

Thanks

I will take a stab at these.

1. Couldn't you just use ntdsutil.exe ?

2. KCC will keep sites within three hops. Each machine has a KCC So, the way that I understand it, you could have a mesh because each KCC will try to keep sites within three hops.

I am prolly wrong on both of these as I have not read or seen information on it.

I came across someone with the same question as mine at Brainbuzz and thought I would share it with anyone who was interested. I hope they don't mind me borrowing it:

Question:
The volume that my NTDS.DIT file is
located on is too small! I wasn't too informed when I first
installed this Windows 2000 machine, and I just did what
Microsoft said, and made the boot volume 2 Gigs. Now I'm
running out of space! Is there an easy way for me to change
the location of my Active Directory-related files and folders?

Answer:
I have heard rumors that messing around with NTDSUTIL might
allow you to do this, but from what I can tell, it would be
like trying to do a head transplant. i.e., its not easy and
probably won't work. Instead, bring up another server, make
it another DC in the same domain, and transfer all the FSMO
roles to that machine. Run dcpromo and un-DC the original
machine. Run dcpromo again and reinstall the Active Directory
on the original machine, all the while being mindful of the
disk locations you want Active Directory-related files to be
stored. Transfer the FSMO roles back to the original machine.
That should do it.

Are you sure you can transfer the FSMO? I thought you had to flatten the server once you nabbed control from the original one. I could be wrong though.

I am sure of nothing. I am eternally a seeker of knowledge. That was the best answer I could find and notice it has been three weeks since I posted the question.

Unfortunately my test network doesn't allow me to try this out. If anyone wants to comment I am all ears.

F=flexible, you can transfer FSMO's back if needed.

If I remember correctly in my readings, if you snatch the RID FSMO role, the old RID FSMO cannot be brought back online without demoting it before connecting to the network. Afterwards, you can connect the old server back to the network and run dcpromo and transfer the role back over. I think the RID FSMO was the only FSMO that had to be done this way, the others could be transferred immediately after bringing the machine back online.
