www.mcsefreak.com/subnetting.htm

Read the doc, and let me know if you were to still have some questions.

Subnetting is a game of number: the more you do it, the faster you'll understand. Start with some Class A and B examples, and when you really have that down move on to Class C.

Your website doesn't explain that the subnetting equation can be used for two different things: calculating the number of hosts per subnet or calculating the subnet mask for a certain number of subnets needed.

It also doesn't explain that depending on what you want to calculate, the value of N represents two completely different things.

It also only gives examples that perfectly match your subnetting chart (i.e. solve for 6 subnets and solve for 30 subnets). It needs to include examples where the subnets needed are not on the chart (i.e. 8 subnets or 63 subnets)

It also doesn't explain why you drop the first and last set of IP ranges when subnetting (i.e. why is my first network ID 10.16.0.0? What happened to the first set of IPs in our 10.0.0.0 network)

It also doesn't explain which octet you place your calculated new subnet mask value.
i.e. I need 240 in my subnet mask, but which octet do you place it in? 255.240.0.0, 255.255.240.0, or 255.255.255.240
You don't explain that.

All of those things are fundamentals that people will need to know in order to do subnetting, especially for the exam.

If you're advertising to buy guides from you, you should make sure the free sample is complete. Otherwise, it looks like you don't know what you're talking about.

Yawn. I was not advertising a study guide, I was giving him a free resource. But you know that. Your agenda is as plain as you are: you're just interested in bad mouthing others. You're a waste.

For your information, I have taught subnetting to many, many people using this very guide, and all of them can subnet perfectly well in the real world and passed their tests. So I think it's time you moved on, because you're way out of line.

I also notice that you do not provide free resources for others to learn. You just like to bash those who do.

When answering a thread to which I participated, all you can ever say is Freak sucks, Freak does not know what he's talking about. Now I realize that I am paid more than you are, and that I have more certs and degrees than you do, etc, etc... but you know, this jealousy is really starting to make you look like a bitter little child.

Do yourself a favor and run a search on this site and others to see how many people THANKED ME for the free subnetting guide and said that they FINALLY understand subnetting thanks to it.

You poor little dumb mutt... more yapping every day. Sad.

Thanks for all of your help I shall use both. So that I may understand it better.

As for the other comments thanks but no thanks because you did nothing constructive in bitching about someone else.

Those are just basic facts about subnetting that you don't have in your guide. If you want to teach someone, you need to teach them right.

Your guide is good, but it lacks good examples and it lacks fundemental explanations of what you are doing.

And if you didn't want comments about your guide, don't ask for them.

As an MCSE instructor, I had over 400 students get their MCSE. I taught administrators and engineers for major companies like Compaq/HP, Bindview, and the DoD.

If you are such a great instructor, you will know how to correct your own guide.

Notice that I comment on your technical weaknesses. You, on the other hand, only make personal insults.

That says a lot about your integrity.

yawn [freak this, freak that...] man, grow up already. This is absolutely ridiculous. You need to get a life other than trying to pick fights with other posters on an online board, just because they put themselves on the line and offer material to others.

Please, take it easy, Guys...
curiousgeorge, you attacked freak first, alright? Freak is just defending himself.
This is the 216 Forum, we are nice around here. Let's keep it that way.

George,
It would be much more helpful to asclark and others if you posted the material that you mention to be lacking or at least where to find it.

Darn.. There is so much beef in here. One thing I can say when I was starting to learn subnetting the best guide I could find that explained subnetting is Freak's guide. It didn't go too deep in VLSM.
But take it easy guys and let's just help each other learn something.
