I just started a new job in a network of 52
PC's and have to ask this questions to anyone who cares to reply:
I recently upgraded a few WIN98 machines on the network, but now I can only log onto these using the Admin password.. Why is this? The previous had users had profiles and never used them because WIN98 did not need them to log on.. But the profiles check out on other machines and the server ok.

-I know this should be simple and it must be the stress of the new job?
so far I have tried very little an appreciate any suggestions.

....on how the network is set up to give a reasonable answer to this question.

I'm running one file server (WIN2k server) and a web server machine (for e-mail and web-based print services) ..Just imagine the simplest star topology setup with just a few
departments. I've got several (six tops) people loging into their terminals as the administrator, using the servers administrator PWD.. (I realize this is a big no-no)..but this is why I need help

What's the error message when you try to log in using the user profiles. It sounds like the group or lack thereof that those profiles belong to maynot have access to log into those computers.

Is this an Active Directory domain?

Yes, the accounts were created using "active directory users and computers"
..I'm not at work now, but the message I get is the standard windows NT logon error..

key note: the Password sign-on screen does not have a domain field, just Username/PWD

..I think this will be the thing I need to change to resolve this, but I'm not sure?

OK, we need to back up a little bit.

After you upgraded the W98 machines to 2000, did you join the computers to the domain?
If you did, do you see them listed in Active Directory?

Also, when you say the users are logging on with the Administrator's account and password, do you mean the local Administrator account or the Domain Administrator account (very big difference)?

If you didn't join the computers to the domain, that's your problem.
If you did, place them in a workgroup, delete the computer account in Active Directory, then try to join the domain again.

If the Domain box is not showing up when you log on, click the Options... button.

Once you create user accounts for everyone, NO ONE should be logging in using the Administrator's account.

Hope that helps.

Let us know if it works.

Yup, thats it .. all I had to do was click on network I.D. and make sure I was typing the users name; PWD; and domain correctly.. Now they are setup ..now all I have to do is change the administrator PWD
Thanks for all the feedback.
