Which is applied first AH or ESP in IPSec transport mode cause my Microsoft Press and Exam Cram 2 book gives conflicting information? MS Press says AH is applied first while Exam Cram mentions ESP and its kind of confusing.

The ESP payload (encrypted data) is preceded by the AH header. Which is in turn preceded by the IP header. So the packet arrives, the AH header assures the recipient that the packet has not been tampered with, then the ESP payload is decrypted and the data is obtained.

Thanks! Jeff, MS Press book was right from the start.

AH stands for Authentication Header.

Just remember it this way: you have to authenticate with a computer before it will talk to you.

ESP encrypts the actual data packet.
