You get hired as a new MCSE admin when the company fires the old one. One of your first tasks is to document the DHCP setup of the company.

You locate two DHCP servers on 1 of the 15 subnets of the company. On both of them you see 15 identical scopes created by the previous admin. Yet one DHCP has leased out all the addresses and the other DHCP has not leased out a single one. You verify that both DHCP's were built 3 months ago on the same day.

You begin to wonder what's causing this current situation. What do you expect to find before even seeing it?

Of the top of my head, I would say that the DHCP server with no leases has not been authorised in AD to give out IP addresses.

If the admin setup two servers, one main and one backup then the 80/20 rule should have been followed with regard to the DHCP scope.

Maybee, maybee not....

Stepfaul,

Where does it say in the question that these are win2k servers?

Sorry, I have assumed they are W2K as this forum is dedicated to W2K, a question like this would normally state whether W2K or NT4 servers are being used.

Maybee I am being stupid and missing something so obvious.

stepfaul is right - this is win2000 forum and we assume questions are about win2000.

First - is the second server connected to network?
Second - is the IP address of second server in the same range as scopes on it (I assume, there are no superscopes used)?

Get the obvious stuff out of the way first, has the second server been Authorised and have the scopes been Activated.
