Been getting confused about what records get updated in which situation, so I have written a very quick summary of this. Hope this helps somebody else, comments are welcome.

Windows 2000 with a static address
Dynamically registers both A and PTR records for all DNS Names.

2000 Machine assigned a DHCP IP Address
Client machine updates its own A record
DHCP server attempts to update Pointer record
This behaviour is dependant on the DNS Settings in the DHCP server.

Non-Windows 2000 machines using DHCP address
Server does not register A or PTR records, you must enable this support on the DNS tab of DHCP. “Enable updates for DNS clients that do not support dynamic updates”

Good summary, you can bet that you will see at least 2-3 questions on this topic, including the deletion of records when the host relinquishes the address.

Just found a very interesting write up in the Server help. Evidently if you have a 2000 DNS Server handing out dynamic addresses requested by a 2000 DHCP Server. If the clients are Pre 2000 then when you upgrade them to 2000 they will not be able to update their own DNS records. Evidently the DHCP server retains ownership of the record. To overcome this the DHCP server should be a member of the DNSupdateproxy group so that the clients can then takle ownership of their DNS records.

Question is... does the DHCP server have to a member of the DNSupdateproxy group before it starts handing out addresses and requesting dynamic updates on the DNS Server? I would imagine it would, but some feed back is always welcome.

It would have to be a member of that group prior to creating any DNS records that you would wish to have all DHCP servers and or 2k clients be able to update. Otherwise the records ceated by the DHCP server prior to being a member of that group, that server would be the only entity to have permissions to update that record. Go observation.

Good rule of thumb for Dynamic updates and scavenging of old records is that whichever component created the record will be the one that deletes it. EG if the client created the record it will be the client that deletes the obsolete record and the same if it was the DHCP server that created the record, it will be the server that deletes it.
