Author WINS Confusion!

I’m finding MS 216 TK introduces new information in the question and answers section. Information that is not previously covered in the corresponding sections of the book.

Pg 703. It says that under replication partner properties that you can set enable automatic partner configuration. Funnily enough it forgets to mention this in the WINS section of the book and I can’t even see this option when I try and do this on the WINS server replication partner.

Pg 708. It says the correct port for WINS traffic is TCP port 42. Well in the WINS section it goes on about port 137 and how this is used for Netbios NS, but it fails to mention anything about port 42. So I look up in WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\ser
vices file and I find under port 42 – host name server. Which to me seems DNS. Then under port 137 I find netbios name.

Confusing or what?

I find this frequently with the MS guides, you'll get the question before you read the answer. Kind of a fluke, but it does spark your curiousity, among other emotions.

A List of the Windows Server Domain Controller Default Ports

While I have not specifically read about TCP 42, it would appear the hostname server would indeed point to a WINS server, as port 53 TCP/UDP points to Domain Name Server.

PORT NUMBERS

Finally, there is an Autoconfiguration of Replication Partners:

Chapter 7 - Windows Internet Name Service

quote:
Autodiscovery of WINS Partners

The autodiscovery feature enables a WINS server to discover its replication partners automatically, rather than being manually configured with a predetermined set of replication partners. To turn this feature on from the Microsoft Management Console, on the Replication Partners Properties page, check the Enable automatic partner configuration check box.

Periodically, WINS servers announce their presence on the network. The WINS announcements are sent on a multicast address reserved for WINS (224.0.1.24). WINS servers with autodiscovery enabled listen for these announcements and learn about other WINS servers on the network. Any WINS servers discovered this way are automatically added to the partners list as both a push and pull partner. This feature should be used only when you are sure that no unauthorized WINS servers will be placed on the network. Otherwise, the unauthorized servers are picked up as partners.

Hope this helps!?

What I learned preparing for 216, was that whatever book you have is insufficient on it's own as preparation. Anytime the book gets hazy or leaves you out on the details or the details become so complicated the you can't work it out, got the the web for more in depth study. Simply put, two people can write about the same thing and one will be understood better by you than the other.
