| There is one question in MS 2000 Network Infrastructure Administration Page 355 #4 as following:
"On a mixed Windows and UNIX network, you deploy a WINS server to provide NetBIOS name resolution services and configure the WINS clients accoridngly. Later, youdisconver that the computers running Windows operating systems in the network cannot access UNIX resources byusing their NetBIOS names. What should you do to resolve the problem?
A. Install a WINS proxy agent on one of the other computers runign Windows.
B. Install a WINS proxy agent on one of hte UNIX computers.
C. Create static mappings for the UNIX computers on the WINS server.
D. Create static mappings for the WINS server on the UNIX computers.
It shows the correct answer is 'C'.
I wonder why we cannot use 'A'???
Please kinldy advise when we use WINS proxy and when we have to use static mappings.
Thanks a lot. | |

| A WINS proxy (or proxy agent) is a client computer configured to act on behalf of other computers that cannot directly use WINS. These computers resolve NetBIOS names through broadcasts. Broadcasts do not pass through routers and therefore may not reach the destination computer.
The question says the problem is with computers running Windows operating systems. Since Windows based computers are able to use WINS, we do not need a proxy. We need to add entries (static mappings) into WINS. | |
