| Hey all...im torn on what to do. We have our main office here in the states and we are setting up a remote office that has 3 users up in Canada. They will eventually be joined by RRAS via VPN. So my question is...should i create the Canada server as a child domain of our main office or a new domain all together? Any benefits when we join them via VPN? Thanks for your time! | |

| It hardly seems worth the administrative and software cost to have a separate domain and server etc. for three users. If they have a modem you could set up a VPN in a matter of minutes, compared to hours and effort to put a dc up in a remote site. What are your needs for a domain controller at that site? | |

| They need to be able to share files, printers, etc and we purchased a PowerEdge 600SC (cheap) for that purpose. I brought up your point when we were talking about buying equipment for them but the powers that be wanted a server up there. But if i will be connecting the offices through a VPN in RRAS should i setup their server as a child domain or as a separate one? We will need access to eachothers files. | |

| I'd set it up as a member server in the existing domain. I have deployed three users in a trailer in a remote site, and they needed print and file sharing, I just deployed another workstation to act as a file-print server, running on 2k Pro. It had a tape drive for backups, connectivity was provided by a shared modem device.
There is no credible need for an additional Domain to be created, or a license for Server to be deployed. What provision will be made for AD replication?
The more complicated you make a remote site, the more service it will require. Let's say for example you make a separate domain for this remote site. If you have a hardware failure on this DC, how will you recover the domain? At what cost? To avoid that will you deploy a redundant DC? In the meantime your three users will not have access to the file or print services, because they cant authenticate.
In thinking about it, if you instist on deploying a DC, don't make it a sub to any existing domain, make it a new domain directly below the forest root, at least you can minimize the replication. |
