Author Setting up DNS

I am running W2K server configured as a domain controller. DNS is configured properly as far as I can figure and is AD integrated. The only thing I have not done is pointed the DNS server to the loopback addy (127.0.0.1) - when I do, I loose my internet name resolution. I connect to the internet thru a DLink gateway/router.

I am missing how the name resolution gets from my local domain to the root-servers on the internet. Any ideas?

Point your dns to your network adapter Ip. Then you will get it to work..

If I clear my DNS setting in the IP properties area of the adapter card it defaults to the loopback. I did try the locally assigned IP address for the card as well but had the same problem. I have name resolution for my domain but I cannot resolve anything outside of my network (internet). I know its a DNS problem because I can still ping IPs and my messenger, icq and newsreader all continue to work.

Once I put back my ISP's DNS into my adapter, everyone is happy but I can find nothing that says that is the way it is supposed to work.

How does my AD integrated DNS server know how to get thru my gateway to the root-servers for name resolution??
me? I dunno...

Awesome, thanks!! That was it!! I had a root zone installed in the DNS server. Deleted that, pointed my DNS to the loopback addy, stopped netlogon, started netlogon, flushed the dns and we B off and running now. Now on to more DNS stuff and Exchange installs ...

Thanks again!

the recommended steps:
