Domain Name registration process???

| Can anyone explain to me ehat the process is to register a domain name. I know that it has to be registered with a Name Service registrar, but how do I know If my name is valid or taken? Would I have to go through a waiting period?
If I wanted to host my own Domain Name service, is there a database that I have to link to for registration?
Just curious as to what is entailed in DNS registration | |

| Sound like you have a pretty good handle on it. Internic was the only vendor in charge of actual domain name assignment, now I think a few companies do it now. The database is the internet, in essence. If one of the registrars says your name is available, I don't see where there would be the need for a waiting period. | |

| You can do a search to see if a domain name is available by going to:
http://www.internic.com/whois.html
Once you register your domain name, you need to update the IP address of your name servers. It takes about 48 hours (usually less) for your domain to update around the globe.
