How do you have an active directory integrated workgroup?

i donīt have any workgroup on the network, the picture you see show the DOMAIN as an icon... but the error say that...... this is browsing on the DC... if you try to browse on any pc on the network on the same way, a similar message appear.... (but donīt say nothing about workgroup)

let me make more captures. the enviroment is a domain and wins is not on use, clients are only win2k pro and servers are win2k adv server. the domain is on native mode. the login process is superb fast and no name resolution problem exists.

servers have sp3 applied and all patches, including iis patchs, ie updates, cumulative patchs, etc...

the dhcp donīt have clases and a simple class c private network is in use. only 15 clients on the network.

i can browse to any pc and see shared resources if i use the \\hostname model.... but if i go to the normal network browsing i have the error i put on the previous post....

dns have srv and all corresponding A entries . Reverse zone is configure and PTR records are present. nslookup show a very good implemented dns enviroment.

all machines are connected to the same switch and we are using cat5 utp 100mbits network.

the internet connection is provided by a secure 3com gateway, who make NAT and have the ip address 192.168.2.1

the network is 192.168.2.0, servers and printers can use any address from the 2 until the 30 address. the scope on the dhcp use a range from 31 to 200.

201 to 254 are for labs and testing purposes....
me? I dunno...

I'm sorry Alex, it just seemed funny to me, I had exactly the same problem last week, unfortunately I dont remember how I got around it, but it seems to me it was fairly straightforward. I was playing with nat and radius at the time, also an xp box.

I should have been listening to Jeff and writing down every fix in a journal.

I dont know what to suggest, everything I know, you know more...

ipconfig /flushdns
ping by ip
ping by fqdn
ping by hostname

check domain computers for membership on dc
check logon account
check domain account at client
remove client from domain and rejoin
was dc demoted and made to new domain dc recently
is dns active directory integrated
updates status
authentication policy configured at client
dns server option configured on dhcp scope
name server configured

I have a feeling this has got something to do with NetBIOS (as I believe browsing in my network places relies on NetBIOS names).

Although you do not have a workgroup, try the fix below from Microsoft & JSI FAQ:-

When Windows 2000 computers are configured as members of a workgroup in a peer-to-peer network, pressing Computers Near Me in My Network Places generates:

Unable to access Computers Near Me. Workgroup is not accessible. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

When you try to navigate through Entire Network / Microsoft Network /<Workgroup Name>, you receive the same error.

The above behavior is likely the result of not having any computer designated as the master browser, or when NetBIOS over TCP/IP is not enabled.

To enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all workgroup computers:

1. Right-click My Network Places and press Properties.

2. Right-click the appropriate connection and press Properties.

3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and press Properties.

4. Press Advanced and select the WINS tab.

5. If you have a static IP address, select Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. If you have a DHCP-assigned IP address, select Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server.

6.Press OK in all open dialogs to close and save the new settings.

7. You may have to restart all the computers in the workgroup to force a browser election.

Worth a try.

Which is word for word the link I provided. Browsing relies on NETBIOS.

I don`t know whats happen... on the 2k server i can see everything... is a member server.... look...

mmmmmm.... the problem was fixed.... yesterday i only make 2 things:

* restart the server
* Enable Netbios over TCP (I change the settings from the original "receive from DHCP... bla bla"

i don`t make any testing after change and restart... but now i see the server DC browsing fine and my XP pc browsing too......... look:

But i don`t understand... so in a 100% dns enviroment i must keep using NETBIOS to browse the enviroments?...

a important thing... somebody (network admin from remote office) activate the WINS server some weeks ago to make some replicas, as remote office have several Legacy clients and the 1rst name resolution service is WINS on the remote.... so i see the DNS with the configuration for contacting WINS too..... so maybe this is why NETBIOS fix the problem...or maybe was a restart... anyway now is working FINE!

no problem at all, i`m making a new design to connect both offices, using a DSL VPN Hardware, make a new 2k domain on the remote office and add my server as 2nd dc of the same domain, configure replication and sites/subnets, dns integrated and see how this enviroment works...

thanks everybody

Some functions use NETBIOS, browsing for one, limitimg which workstation a user can log onto is another. From what I have experienced, domain trusts use NETBIOS name of domain, as well. XP in order to work with NT, you really should enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP.
