I am not shore, but initially I think you have to use IIS for the SMTP.

"basic email system"
a email server from MS is the Exchange product. Actually Ms Win 2k srv or adv server don`t have any email features, and with IIS you only have the SMTP features to send email messages and SMTP comunications, nothing more.
You need Exchange or a 3rd party mail system like Lotus, Winmail, etc to have a mail server support.

| thanks all,
I became aware that ms has demo software available by download. I dont have the link but I think it can be found under 'trial' software. the download speed I got was huge, and it took longer to install sp3 than to get the exchange 2000 stuff.
unfortunately, I dont know the first thing about it and it is clearly more than I can digest in an afternoon. I must refocus my efforts as much as possible. I have copied the necessary files to a cd and when the time comes, they will be reading and waiting to reinstall and learn.

| One step at a time... Exchange deserves your undivided attention. | |

No kidding. You can probably spend a lifetime learning Exchange and Outlook as you can on Windows 2000 itself.

| I'm eye-deep in studying for 224 now. Interesting though, Windows 2003 sports both SMTP and POP3 servers, so it would seem that you could have some rudimentary email without Exchange on 2003, what do you think? | |

It seems to me that these are protocols that are already available in w2k.
In order to have email I would need to have a server set up with the appropriate application installed in order to organize the information.
These protocols simply facilitate the transmission of information, correct? Therefore the presence of these protocols on their own doesnt guarrantee access to an email system.

| I don't think POP3 server is included with 2k.
But the inclusion of both a means to send and a means to recieve, got me to thinking.
When the smoke clears...?

smtp on 2k is only presents for the IIS use, the replication, notifications, etc, not for email administration.... |
