Hey Adam!!!! congratulations! ¿how do you feel now? hehehe....uh? I'm studying for this one too almost since 1 year, believe me. And still nervious....still waiting. I have never failed a test before, so that drives me nervious; can't decide when finally take the test. ¿Any tips?....¿how was yours? i mean, this 2nd test you finally passed? What topics did you have most?

| Let it Blaze Adam..That's the way to go. C0ngrats on your pass. It beat you once and you decided that to be beaten twice is just a bad feeling so you went back into the labs, and did your home-work and got the better of him. | |

You should have now a solid foundation for 70-218. I'm sure you will pass with flying colors. So....buying a 70-216 book, like Coriolis, should be enought for you. I do not recommend buy a specific book for 70-218. Also, be aware of a lot of GPO and policies questions. Mine was more focused on 70-217.

| Congrats on 216!
218 will seem very basic compared to 216.
218 doesn't go into extreme detail like 216 did. Focus more on simple problems (i.e. user accounts not set up correctly, drivers need to be updated, share permissions are messed up, IP address info is wrong, etc)
I took 218 without any studying.
Whenever anyone asks about resources, I always tell them I used M$ Administrators Companion and study guides from braindumpcenter.com.
The Administrators Companion is an excellent reference for on the job.
Good luck! MCSA is within your reach!

Microsoft books/study guides for all test is not the best choice (IMO). There are better books for 70-215, for example...or 70-216. Besides, Microsoft books are too much theory...and not much practice. I think the right book depends of the test and the user knowledge level.

| Adam that is excellent news, if anyone deserves this pass it is you. Well done, you have passed this test honestly and know for yourself that you know what you are doing now.
218 will be a breeze compared to 216, I have done it. More questions on Group policies and the different types of groups. I used the MS book for 218 which served me fine.
| Particle 2003-08-06, 4:48 am |
| Nice one Adam.
I've done 218 already and found it ok after 210 and 215. Seems to be less detail than 216, so you should be ok. I seem to remember even getting some general server questions.
Go for it and good luck. | |

| Thanks a lot everybody for the nice words also thanks for everybody in this forum for support and help.
Really special feeling to kill this dragon
Another good news, if you remember when I failed the last time I told you that I didn’t get the extra time for non-native English speakers, I have contact VUE and they came to this conclusion:
Our technical department has researched your exam package and it indeed turned out you did not receive your extra time. We offer our sincere apologies and a free exam.
That really help me to be confident of passing that exam.
My thanks to VUE stuff that interested in solving my problem.
And save me Fr 215

I can tell you that you have to study and know your stuff, I have got RRAS, DHCP, DNS, very little WINS, CA, and network monitor, about 10 blue Qs.
my advice is do as much as you can of practice questions of course after you finish your normal study, it is the best way to know your self, easycert and transcender are good.
good luck | |

| Cool bananas!
218 isn't that easy. It is more wide spread. You have to know or the ground theory stuff from 210 and 215 which 216 does not even go into. But i think 216 covers DNS, RRAS, and DHCP well which 218 focuses on. But for 218 you have to know GPO, AD and terminal services in a bit of detail.

Adam:
i have a question for you. ¿what do you want to mean when you talk about non-native english extra time? I mean....i always take my tests in english, but i live at Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico's native language is spanish (altought is a USA territory). And also, my native language is spanish too. ¿Do That means i could have an extra time, no matter if i take the test in english? Or the extra time benefit just apply when the test is taken in spanish?

Jocampo, I live in Latvia (non-english speaking country). I taked all my tests in english and had extra 30 min. for every test. Should be the same for you if you take tests in english. Ask your test center.

Ohhhh....i understand! so, the language i use for the real test is not related with the extra time? Mmm....interesting. And now, ¿what's the time limit for 216? And what's the time limit with the "extra time"?

From MS site:
English as a Second Language
If an exam is not available in your native language and you must take it in English, you may request an additional 30 minutes to complete it. You must make this arrangement before appearing at the testing center. Please explain your needs when you register for the exam.

Some sources mention 180 min. for normal (without extra time) exam 70-216.

I checked on 2test.com The test (70-216) appears to be available in Castillian Spanish. So...i guess i have not the extra time. Right?

even if there is an exam version in your native language and you request it in non-native language you have the right of extra time.
is that the answer for your quesion?

Ohhh...i see...so, the point here is that what really matter is the native language i use to speak, right?....so, if my native language is spanish, i can ask for extra time. Mmmm, very interesting. I'll call to my testing center on monday.
Thanks Adam. | |

| 70-216 was the hardest of all MCSE 2000 exams, no question about that. I believe it is difficult for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it focuses on Windows 2000 concepts that are not commonly used in most enterprises. For example, very few companies (none I've ever seen) use Windows servers as routers. Nonetheless, the exam focuses on that.
Secondly, the exam is difficult because it does not exclusively test on Windows 2000 concepts. There are quite a few questions on VPN technology, routing, routing protocols, etc. It doesn't seem as if this material would be on a Windows exam, but it is.
The key to success is manyfold. 1) study and understand all terminology. 2) work on the 216 concepts in a lab, it's the only way to really understand what they're talking about and 3) relax! it's an exam. if you fail, it's ok. You'll get it next time.
good luck and best wishes.

| 218 was, in my opinion, the easiest exam of the MCSA path, and perhaps the easiest exam Microsoft has ever released. It's pretty general, so a decent overview knowledge of Windows 2000 concepts will be more than sufficient.
Some key concepts include: DNS, WINS, DHCP, very basic OU/GPO concepts, NTFS, etc.
If you've cleared 215, you'll be OK on 218.

I am agree
I think studying Cisco materials helped me a lot understanding many of networking concepts that found in MS objectives, and not related directly to W2K.

| Congrats! The beast got the best of me the first time because I didn't give it the respect it needed. I studied, but not as much as I needed to. It was a great learning experience though and humbled me. The second go around I passed it and earned it repect. Seemed harder than the TCP/IP exam was.
Next for me is 218, which while I know is not as hard as 216, I will still treat it as such. I learned my lesson!
| jphilips2000 2003-08-11, 12:11 am |
| Congrats.
Now that the hardest is behind you, the rest of the MCSE track is a breeze. Just keep doing what your doing.
218 is more practical and straightforward. You should have no problems.
| luisjo 2003-08-11, 2:45 am |
| Congratulations, i think that 218 will be easier for you, i already pass it and after reviewing my 216 books, a lot of the content in the 218 is from the 216.
Good luck, im hitting my books hard to pass the beast too.

| Congrats Adam, like a lot of us you got it 2nd time round which is a great feeling. And I have to agree with everyone else that 218 is very general and that if you sit it soon after an exam like 216, with all that knowledge already in your head you should pass it no problem.
Best of luck | |
