| I have been coming across a bit of conflicting information which can throw you off a bit. I have read question/answer explanations that say you can't use VPN connections with dial-in access. Eg for a portable computer using modem to access his office.
I then read through some of the w2k server help stuff and it gives me the impression that you can use both PPTP and L2TP VPN with dial-up modem.
I haven't tried this personally so i can't definitely say you can or cannot.
Does anyone know for certain? I would hate to get it wrong exam time.

| You can use VPN over any connection to the Internet, including dial-up. You could not use VPN over a direct RRAS connection to the network though.
So a remote user wishing to use VPN would establish a connection to the Internet by whatever means, then establish the VPN connection to their target network. If they are dialing directly into their target network, they can't really use VPN, but can use a variety of authentication and encryption protocols for that connection.

Which means that VPN is unneccessary with a RAS connection.

| Ok that clears that up a bit. So you need the ISP's network to allow you to do it otherwise yes you cant. If you don't use a VPN you can still use MSCHAPv2 and strong(est) encryption to make it a secure connection. Also certificates can be used with smart cards etc. | |
