I have a cable modem and 3 computers connected with a Linksys router. I use vpn software to access my company's intranet/domain. When using the vpn I can't access my local area network to print. Does anybody know how to get around this?

I've got round it by installed 2 network cards in my PC. One connects to the internet (I'm using RRAS to share with the rest of the network), and the other NIC will be used for the LAN. When you need to print it will have both networks availble (VPN & LAN)

Hope this helps?

Ray.

Thanks, l9nux! But I'm going to hold out for another solution. I'm not sure I want to tie up a pcmcia network card for this. I'm using a laptop. Any other suggestions?

On the advanced TCP/IP settings of the clients VPN dial-up entry, make sure "Use default gateway on remote network" is NOT checked. Check out the links below...

Thanks Slim! But I am using a cable modem, not a dial up modem. I connect through a router.
I just got a new laptop yesterday that runs 2000 professional. Now I can't access the printer/shares on my lan at all (unless I log in locally to my laptop, which is a pain just to print).

This also applies if you are using a cable modem.. I had the same problem with my home lan connecting to my office vpn.. I am also behind a linksys router with a cable modem.. I tried the suggested method that I recommended to you and it worked fine.. Using my cable modem I had to "make a new connection" using Network and Dial-Up Connections.. I then went to my advanced TCP/IP settings and made the "use the default gateway for the remote network" change.. Hope this helps..

Did that solve the problem?

No it did not help. I tend to think the problem is security related since I can print when logged on locally. I just don't have time to worry about it right now, but thanks for tips.
I have scheduled 216 for Thursday AM and A+ for Thurs. PM. Not sure if I'm ready, but I would never take the tests if I waited until I was sure!

Wow a two for, with the 216 being the first half! Good luck, mcdoud! Let us know how the 216 compares to the A+! You know, if it's half as hard!
