If means that you need to stop the Wins service, before you can compact the database.

Just like any database, the wins records of add and deletion leave open spacing in the database, by compacting the database, it reindex the database and remove the open space and make the database more efficiant. It is like the PST files for outlook.

3.At the command prompt, type net stop WINS and press Enter.

4.Change to the %systemroot%\system32\wins directory. After changing to this directory, type:

jetpack wins.mdb winstemp.mdb and then press Enter.

5.At the command prompt, type net start WINS and press Enter.
