Rubbish book - great kindling.

| Books and guides seem to change in reliability and how they are written depending on the exam. This may seem kinda obvious because typically they are written by different authors. However one would think that there woiuld still be some kind of standard or uniformity established and controlled by the publisher.
New Riders book for 70-216 is complete rubbish. I am using it and struggling. Not because of the complete lack of depth on any given topic (oops I gave it away) but the continuous mistakes throughout the entire chapters. From several typos...So what?...I don't care about words spelt wrong but IP addresses that don't make sense and diagrams with the wrong descriptions below them are very annoying. The subject is hard enough without the book you are learning from being inacurate. The end of chapter exam questions...a few of them have no right answer in the options...I get confused, choose something that seems to be the closest (maybe a trick question I think) and get it wrong....Upon reviewing their answer, they are wrong. I checked it out with several sources (example - 1 question/answer set [without putting the whole question down here] claims that you can allocate a DHCP scope of 40 addresses from the IP range of 10.10.25.20 to 10.10.25.39 with a default network mask) - Please if this is correct tell me??
Step by Steps that...miss steps (Where did THAT screen come from?) it's as if the authors write them from the top of their heads without going through it themselves. ("Ooops, forgot about that screen, ah well 'tis published now")
And so on....
Sorry about my rant, I don't normally do this and am quite positive about things, but this book is getting me down and the exam is looming up, and I am not confident. Thats my 2 cents worth.
Disclaimer : This text is a personal critisism. If you are associated with New Riders or are one of the authors, well... sue me. Your book sux.

| as posted elsewhere, I usually recommend the TCP/IP book of the win2k server resource kit for this test. It was hands down the best book imho.. | |

| Thanks Freak, will have a look. Fortunatly also I have the MS Press Core Book on this subject as backup, but it's an e-book and not so easy to read on a bus or train. | |

| lol That's the problem with them digital books, huh? Sometime, we still have to go lo-tech and get an actual paper book -- the horror | |

| Actually, I like e-books, only if you can adjust the size of the print! And if it has an editing feature, that's nice too! | |
|
| I agree... heck, I *sell* ebooks after all! | |

| I fully agree with you Johny about the NR book. I even submitted my feedback to the book club, which is now available for all people to see before they buy the book from there. I have the core e-book as well, and have also obtained the Osborne book, which goes more in depth in some areas and is easier to read than the NR. | |

| It's not often I get up on the soapbox, but maybe this will give you some insight, J5.
A lot of people, I've noticed, slam the Sybex books for various reasons (quite a few I agree with) and I could never advocate the road of using only one source, but...I am currently studying this material as well; completed the TestOut CD in 3 days; then dove headfirst into Sybex not really expecting much more insight. What a surprise I had! The author is actually funny and writes in an easy to understand, explanatory style. I have the entire series for MCSE coursework from this publisher and have been really impressed with this book (on chapter 8 so far). I still have a long way before achieving 216 nirvana, but this guy, Paul Robichaux, is helping the process along quite a bit.
Of course, all this drooling is only my humble opinion...take it or leave it!

| And a big thank you for your subnetting guide! That confusion is finally cleared up for me...what a relief! | |

| I am happy that the guide was of help... it was a pain to write, but it was worth it | |
