| And today's poser is ....
Q19. Alison is the Systems Administrator for the Birmingham branch of the Great Britain Space Agency. She is also going to set up the Birmingham domain - birmingham.gbsa.gov.uk - as a full Active Directory domain. The Birmingham branch has five member servers and 250 clients workstations. 75 of these client workstations have just have Windows 2000 Professional installed and have been left with the default networking settings.
Currently most of the computers are members of an old NT4 domain which has IIS installed and use it as a DNS server - though they are soon due for retirement.
Alison installs a domain controller for the domain birmingham.gbsa.gov.uk known as dc1.birmingham.gbsa.gov.uk but does not configure DNS as part of the installation.
Once she has installed Active Directory on DC1, she configures a standard primary zone for the birmingham.gbsa.gov.uk domain on DC1.
Alison would like each of these 75 client workstations to automatically register themselves with the DNS server.
What additional steps must Alison take to ensure that the 75 Windows 2000 Professional clients will get registered with the DNS server on DC1.birmingham.gbsa.gov.uk? (Select all that apply)
A. Install a DHCP server and configure the scope options so that the clients will use the DC1 as their DNS server.
B. Configure the DHCP server with the "Enable updates for DNS clients that do not support dynamic updates" setting.
C. Enable the Windows 2000 Professional machines to dynamically update their DNS records in Active Directory.
D. Enable the zone for the birmingham.gbsa.gov.uk domain to accept dynamic updates.
E. Configure the Windows 2000 Professional machines as DHCP clients.
Good Luck .... see you tomorrow for the answer!!

| I'll say C & D. Hope thats it. | |

| How about A, B, C, D, & E? | |

| I'll go for 'A', 'C', 'D', 'E'. | |

| After a more thorough reading I discovered "default network settings", so this would me the clients are DHCP enabled. So I'm going to have to add A & E to my previous post. That will be my final answer. | |

| I will say A, D, and C
"default network settings" means DHCP is installed and enabled on client machines
Since, the question only asks how would she get the 75 W2KPro clients to send dynamic updates, you don't need to configure the "Enable updates for DNS clients that do not support dynamic updates" setting.

Good point. So E is not needed.

| Chiming in a bit late on this one ...
I'm gonna' go with A, B, C and D - I'm assuming only the 75 machines are running 2000 Pro, so the rest may be older clients.

| Thanks Frank for letting me know I blew it big time. Evidently, I typed a few more extra letters than I meant to.
How about A & D? | |

D. Enable the zone for the birmingham.gbsa.gov.uk domain to accept dynamic updates.
E. Configure the Windows 2000 Professional machines as DHCP clients.
And the answer is ....
Correct Answer: A and D
If you create a DNS zone after installing Active Directory, the zone must be configured for dynamic updates. This can be done through the DNS console by setting the "Allow dynamic updates?" of the zone to Yes.
By default, all Windows 2000 clients are DHCP clients and will attempt to register their DNS records with the DNS server. You do not need to configure the DHCP server to enable updates for DNS clients that do not support dynamic updates unless you have pre-Windows 2000 clients that you would like to be automatically registered with the DNS server. |
