I wrote 70-216 on this past Saturday. What a long drawn out test. Froze to death in the testing centre. Needless to say I failed and now I am needing some advice on good study materials. I was originally using Sybex which seems to be lacking big time.

Is it worth me going out and buying the MS preparation books?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

well... given a book is only 50 bucks... vs a retest at 125... I would say it is worth it to get a book etc to supplement your study.

I always get 2 or more books for a given subject...

you can/should also make use of www.microsoft.com/technet
take each topic discussed in your sybex book and search it on the site. try searching for dns, dhcp etc

always, browse over the site, how tos, deployment and all that. read those that are on topics and try to see the same subject from a different perspective to enhance your learning.

according to you, you froze... relax... being nervous or blank out is more detrimental than just not understanding the subject... I mean, if you can think clearly, atleast you have a good shot in working through a subject and make a pretty decent guess... if you froze... nothing work. read/study and relax before the test... have a drink or something even... taking a test drunk would be more enjoyable and prolly still have better odd than being frozen at passing the test

I don't believe any one book will be completely comprehensive as to cover all the objectives 100% except, of course, the Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit, which can now be accessed free online just by clicking the referenced link. It should be almost all you need to further your studies, that of course, and tons of hands on practice. More than any other cert in the MCSE track, the 216 will require that you get plenty of hands on practice to pass the exam.

This link has been referenced for you thanks to the courtesy of our good friend and very helpful contributor Mr. KScheler!

Thank you so much for the advice. It's very much appreciated. I will definately check out the links referenced and go buy another book (saw the Microsoft boxed set for less than 1/2 price at Costco). I rebooked for next Monday so I wouldn't lose the momentum.

Just to clarify though, when I say I froze, I mean literally, it was so cold in the testing centre my feet and hands were numb.

Oh no!!! Bummer. Good you have re-booked it so quickly tho'.

I use New Riders Book and MS Press e-Book along with Transcenders. One book alone doesn't seem to cover all the detail I have found.

Good luck for the re-sit!!

I agree there is not a single source that will provide all of the info.

Therefore, I take a slightly different approach.

Once I have gone through the books that I purchased (typicallythe ExamCram series) and have absorbed as much of the material as I possibly can, I then hit the CramSessions and ExamNotes.

One week out from the test date, I start hitting the book store (I prefer Borders). Grab a cup of coffee, park myself in a chair with a book from a different publisher and begin thumbing through it looking for things that were not in my book. I read through those items and leave. I do this sevral times before test day. Then i hit the MS sites for general reading purposes. Then take the test. This process usually takes me 2 to 3 weeks depending on the subject and my comfort level.

There is a great link on the Brain Buzz site to nearly everything you could want to study they have them for every test. The link below is actually for the Server exam, but you get the idea.

Thanks again, I will take all the advice I get. I want to pass this one the 2nd time around. Can't afford not to. Exam is too expensive to write more than twice.

You might want to look into Transcender; I found it very helpful for this test.

Looks like the other guys have given precious advice.. I used the MS Press books & free notes from examnotes & cramsession.. I also used Transcender as DivXguy recommended.. Transcender has questions with detailed explaination for every answer so you get to know why an answer is wrong or correct.. do get some hands on practice.. good luck on your second attempt

Hey Zara, thanks for the link in your reply to mikop about the W2k resource kit being available online. I wasn'taware of that. Downoloaded the resource kit the other day for XP pro. Was surprised to find a version of FOR XP pro. Unless I'mmistaken, does the W2K Resource kit enable you to install MMC consoles on W95/W98, and Win/ME?? Somehow I thought it might.....
