| I have a enviroment.
A windows 2000 network, with 2000 DC and DNS implementation.
I have 200 workstations. all workstations are win 2k pro.
I only use DNS.
I add a win98 machine, i must add the wins service in the domain for name resolution for the win98 machine or i can use DNS instead for this win98?
THANKS!! | |

| Windows 2000 can resolve NetBIOS names with DNS rather than WINS. WINS is still required to support older clients. However, there may be away around this by tweaking DHCP. I am playing around with this and will keep you posted. -- Pete | |

Full enviroment:
DHCP with scope 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.200
Scope options deliver IP / Smask / DNS / Gateway for internet conectivity.
Server is a Compaq ML350 with Windows 2000 Server, DHCP, DNS and Active Directory and SP2.
I´m working only with DNS.
GPO´s works ok.
Norton Antivirus 7.6 Corporate Edition in a MANAGED enviroment for all clients.
Zonealarm firewall for net protection on SERVER.
Netops / VNC / PC Anywhere combo remote control options available on site.

| Only necesary services are installed on server for security. not other services like IIS, terminal, etc are available.
Languard SCAN don´t report any Vulnerability. | |

| OK, This is what I think. I emphasize that because I haven't tested it yet, although I am in the process of doing so now. In the Properties of the DHCP Server, there is a DNS Tab. On that tab if you check "Enable updates for DNS clients that do not support dynamic updates", that should get you around the WINS requirement.
Essentially, what it does is gets the DHCP Server to update the A and PTR records for clients that do not send the FQDN (which is any pre 2K client). As the client does not pass this information, the DHCP Server calculates it by concatenating the Host Name from the client and the DNS Domain Name defined in the scope.
That, if I understand the interworking correctly, should allow resoultion of FQDN's via DNS instead of NetBIOS Names via WINS.
