Today, I took and passed exam 70-216 on my first try. The exam still has 65 q's but was 175 mins instead of the full 3 hrs.

Here's what I did to prep for the 'beast': basically, I gave up 3.5 months of my life to study day in and day out for this test. For those of you like me who used Exam Crams in the past to study for MS exams skip the 70-216 Exam Cram book and use something else like Sybex. Though it's coverage of topics like WINS and RRAS were a bit weak I felt the chapters on DNS, DHCP and Certificate Svcs were better than other books I've read on the same topics. I augmented my studies by doing additional reading in the W2K Srv Resc Kit, specifically the TCP/IP and Internetworking Guides. And last, I did a lot of practice tests with Transcender.

In addition to all this I did a lot of hands on practice on my home network. I practice so many times with the various server consoles that I began to see them in my dreams. That's okay because there were a few q's on my test on consoles where I knew the answer right away.

On the test I spent no more than 3 minutes on any one question. If I couldn't figure the answer by that time I'd mark it and skip it. My test had a bunch of exhibits (seems like every other question had an exhibit), a few sims, and lots of long-winded MS scenarios. After I went through the 65 q's on the first pass I had about 17 q's skipped and it took two more passes to answer all of them.

There were 3 questions amongst those skipped q's that really stumped me and I pretty much had to guess the answers to them as time was running out for me.

Overall, this was one killer test but the amount of time I put in studying and prepping for it was worth it as it made the test less intimidating. Anyone who puts in as much time in studying for this test as I did can pass it on the first attempt.

Congrats on the pass! Your hard work paid off. I believe this test seperates the real from the paper. You have to have that hands-on and understand the concepts.

Thanx everybody. My next exam will probably be 70-228 SQL Server Admin. I think that test will be even more difficult for me just because I'm relatively new in the database field. I do know I just need to take the 218 exam to get my MCSA.

Hey Buckwheat,
You following me?
I just took the 218 today (only one week after the 216) and in comparison its a spring breeze. Then I'm doing the 228 as well but I'm gonna do the 219 first.

Keep going you'll get there.

awesome job. I agree that the Exam Cram is a good review book, but cannot be considered to be your "main book" for this test.

Best book I found was the WIndows 2000 server resource kit TCP/IP book. Awesome piece of technical writing!
