| And today's poser is ....
Q72. You administer a Windows 2000 network and your network has 3 Windows 2000-based WINS Servers. You want periodic backups of the WINS database on all WINS Servers to occur automatically. What should you do?
A. In the WINS console on all 3 WINS servers, right-click to select the server name, then select the Backup Database option.
B. In the WINS console on all 3 WINS servers, configure the General properties of each WINS server to specify the default backup path.
C. On all 3 WINS servers, use Windows Backup to schedule a regular backup of the contents of the System32\WINS subdirectory.
D. On all 3 WINS servers, configure the File Replication Service to copy the contents of the System32\WINS subdirectory to another location on the disk.
Good Luck .... see you tomorrow for the answer!!

| C or D
the other 2 don't make sense to me so I'll rule em out
I'm gonna go with C because I don't think you can set the replication service to another location on the disk (didn't see that option and I was just messing with this earlier today) and they are just text files so an ordinary backup would do the trick. (but is this the M$ answer

| I'm going to have to say A on this one.
(I would love to give my reasons here, but I will wait. )
| Zaraspook 2002-04-17, 9:15 pm |
| How about B? | |
| bbraunstein 2002-04-17, 9:53 pm |
| I'm with Zaraspook on this one.
"B" it is.
Nice tricky question. Had to dig for that one.
Check out the MCSE Training Kit for Network Infrastructure Administration, Chapter 9, Lesson 4, Configuring WINS Replication. It is the last section before the Lesson Summary.

| I'll go with B | |
| mcdoud 2002-04-17, 10:31 pm |
| Make that A! | |

| I'll take B | |

| My answer is A. | |

| 'B' | |

| I'm going with B.
I hope | |

| I'll say "B". | |
| CyberDude 2002-04-18, 1:54 pm |
| I choose A, as the action menu has the option "Back Up Database". If you specify the back-up directory, the server will automatically back-up the database every 24 hours. | |

And the answer is ....
Correct Answers: A
In this scenario, you want to perform regular backups of the WINS database automatically. The proper procedure is to open the WINS console, right-click the WINS server, and select the Backup Database option. You will then be prompted to give a location where you want the backups to be placed. After the initial backup, periodic backups will occur at regular intervals. Every three hours is the default interval.
Backup parameters for the WINS server are not located on the General properties page.
While it is possible to use Windows Backup to backup the WINS database, it is not the most efficient way to complete this task.
Using File Replication Service does not actually keep a backup of the database. It creates a copy of whatever folder or subdirectory you have stipulated. Therefore, periodically, it will overwrite the contents. The true purpose of a backup is to be able to restore to a certain date or time and the File Replication Service does not fulfill this purpose.

| I know this is getting a bit more than redundant, but……you know, I’m going to have to agree to disagree with this one too.
Right-clicking the WINS server and selecting the Backup database option manually backups the WINS database and will not schedule any periodic automatic WINS database backups. Instead, you must configure the general properties of the WINS server to specify a backup path. Once a backup folder for the database is specified, WINS will perform a complete WINS database backup every three hours by default.
"Configuring WINS for Automatic Backups"
"The WINS database isn't backed up by default. If you have problems with the database you won't be able to recover it. To protect against database failure, you should configure automatic backups or run manual backups periodically. To prepare WINS to perform automatic backups, follow these steps:"
1. "Right-click the server you want to work with in the WINS console, and then select Properties."
2. "In the General tab, enter the folder path that you want to use for backups in Default Backup Path. Click Browse if you want to search for a folder."
3. "To ensure that backups are created whenever the WINS server is stopped, select Backup Database During Server Shutdown."
"Click OK. Automatic backups will then be performed every three hours." Click below for more.......

| I had that exact question word-for-word on my exam yesterday. I guess I did answer that wrong, after all. I answered B, specify default backup path, although I did seriously consider doing the backup as a scheduled task. I guess WINS kind of got pushed to the back of the bus in trying to cram all the IPSec and certificate stuff into my poor little rock-filled head.
Going into my head tomorrow and throw a few of those rocks out, and clean up a little in there.
Boy, this exam sure shows you how stupid you are! This is almost hard as 70-240 was, but I could only do that one 1 time!

| eyeccd,
240 was a beast! In a way I'm kinda glad I only had one shot at it. Once is enough!
These tests are no walk in the park, no matter what anyone says, so just shake it off!

| I have seen this on pratice exams and have to agree with Zara' 'B' | |
| KScheler 2002-04-21, 5:55 pm |
| Agreed! | |

| Okay Chaps ... this is where I got the information from for this question. What do you think?
To backup the WINS database
Open WINS In the console tree, click the applicable WINS server.
Where:
WINS
applicable WINS server
On the Action menu, click Backup Database.
When prompted to confirm, click Yes. After backup is completed, click OK.
Important Do not specify a network drive as the backup location. In addition, if you change the WINS backup or database path in server properties, perform new backups to ensure successful future restorations of the WINS database.
Note To open WINS, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click WINS.
The WINS console provides backup tools so that you can back up and restore the WINS database.
After you specify a backup folder for the database, WINS performs complete database backups every three hours, using the specified folder.
WINS can also be configured to backup the database automatically when the service is stopped or the server computer shut down.
When WINS backs up the server database, it creates a \Wins_bak\New folder under the backup folder you have have specified for Default backup path in server Properties. Actual backups of the WINS database (Wins.mdb) are stored in this folder. By default, the backup path is the root folder on your system partition, such as C:\.
| KScheler 2002-04-21, 7:03 pm |
| After stepping through it on my WINS server, I see your point, even though you still have to specify a backup location. If memory serves me correctly, wasn't answer B more in line with how it was done in NT4? I guess this is one of those things where you sit down at the server and do it without giving a second thought about what menus you actually selected. | |

| The answer's B...this one's pretty easy...hoped to see a harder one. | |
| seattlebum 2002-04-23, 12:14 pm |
| This one is definitely B. |
