I have one server running win2k adv server and a workstation with xp. I have a cable connection for inernet access. My server has two nics for sharing out the connection through a hub. I would like to upgrade the server to a domain controller to play with dns, dhcp and wins. What is the best way to go about the process. To use dhcp, will routing and remote access need to be setup with nat? How will dns function with the cable modems dns settings. Is there any special way dhcp will have to be setup? Any information you can suggest would be appreciated.

Are you going to use private and public IP addresses (wasn't to sure what you were after)? If so read this article:

yeah, using private addresses for my network. When setting up NAT with RRAS, you have the option of using RRAS to use a mini dhcp to assign addresses. If i wanted to setup DHCP on the PDC, is there any links for tricks to that?

Thanks for link, will get me going in right direction.

Upon further searching, this page seems to hit on my question quite a bit.

i setup nat with public and private interface, addresses will be assigned via dhcp, dns is set to foward addresses to external dns numbers. The dhcp assings the addresses but my laptop cannot connect to the internet through the server. It seems that nat is not doing its job. Has anyone run into this problem?

Be sure your client's default gateway is pointing to the internal nic on the NAT server.
