And today's poser is ....

Q36. Within two weeks your company will secure several domain names which must then be added to a newly-installed DNS service on your network server. Before this time, you want to be sure that the DNS service is functioning correctly. What is the best way to test the DNS service without compromising your ability to add the new domain names when they arrive?

A. Use the DNS console and add a zone and host record for an imaginary domain such as domaintest.com. Make sure the host record contains the IP address of a valid host. Use the ping utility with domaintest.com as the command line argument and see it successfully return the IP address of the host.

B. Use the DNS console and add a zone and host record for an imaginary domain such as domaintest.com. Make sure the host record does not contain the IP address of a valid host. Use the ping utility with domaintest.com as the command line argument.

C. Use both the ping utility and the ipconfig utility to test the DNS service. The ping utility can be used to insure that the DNS service IP address responds. The ipconfig utility can be used to add a temporary domain name to the DNS server.

D. Use both the ping utility and the ipconfig utility to test the DNS service. The ping utility can be used to insure that the DNS service IP address responds. The ipconfig utility can be used to make sure that the TCP/IP settings for the DNS service are correct.

Good Luck .... see you tomorrow for the answer!!

How about A?

My pick is:

D. Use both the ping utility and the ipconfig utility to test the DNS service. The ping utility can be used to insure that the DNS service IP address responds. The ipconfig utility can be used to make sure that the TCP/IP settings for the DNS service are correct.

--------
A-Almost selected this one. Pretty close to the real thing. But lacks something that D has

B- Sounds strange it can go without an IP.

C- is even outrageous, it can add an domain to a DNS server.

I think I did something similar to this on my home network. So I say "A"

The reason why I choose A. A allows you to create a test domain to test connectivity. Where answer D says to use ping etc, But if there is no DNS name to test then its pointless.

I have to go with A on this one too. (Seems logical.)*

*Since when is M$ logical??

I'd say A but I'd also use the nslookup command line tool.

And the answer is ....

Correct Answers: A

The best way to test a DNS server is to ping it with a domain name that it contains and see if it returns the associated IP address. Add an address record to the DNS server database. This contains the domaintest.com and a test IP address. You can also ping the IP address.

It is better if the IP address that you use for testing is a real IP address that belongs to a host.

In order for a client computer to resolve DNS names to IP addresses, the client computer's TCP/IP settings must have the address of a valid DNS server that can handle the name resolution queries. Without this, the client computer cannot correctly perform name resolutions and then cannot access named resources such as www.mycomputer.com

Making sure that the host record does not contain an IP address would not work. An IP address must be provided for DNS resolution to work.
