And today's poser is ....

Q23. What purpose would you have in enabling reverse DNS lookup?

A. Anyone with access to the DNS server can find a hostname based on a subdomain.

B. Anyone with access to the Web server can find a hostname based on a subdomain.

C. Anyone with access to the DNS server can find a hostname based on an IP address.

D. Anyone with access to the Web Server can find a hostname based on an IP address.

My pick is :

C. Anyone with access to the DNS server can find a hostname based on an IP address.

Easy one this time...agree with C.

The answer is D since the whole purpose of reverse lookup zones and the inaddr.arpa domain is to resolve IP address to host name, while on the otherhand, forward lookup zones are for host name to IP address lookups.

Without reverse lookup zones, lookups by IP address would be extremely inefficient and way too time consuming. Therefore, the inaddr.arpa domain and reverse lookups were developed to solve this problem. Also, reverse lookup zones are a requirement for the use of the NSLOOKUP utility and certain other security programs.

And the answer is ....

Correct Answers: C

C. Correct: The purpose of a reverse DNS lookup is to allow users to give an IP address and find out the hostname. There are a number of times when this is needed, and it is recommended practice to make reverse lookups available.

A, B and D. Incorrect:

Web servers are not used for hostname resolutions, so these answers would not apply.

An IP address must be supplied and not a subdomain in order to provide reverse DNS lookups.

Note: If you attempt to search all DNS domains to find an IP address using a foward search, the search would be very inefficient and time consuming. For this reason reverse lookups were created.
