Caching DNS Server

| How do I add a caching DNS server that is Active Directory integrated into an existing domain, using a child domain? I've run dcpromo, and tried to add the zone, but I'm not even sure if these are the correct steps. TO BE HONEST I DON"T UNDERSTAND THE POINT | |

| A caching DNS server does not hold any zones whatsoever or is it authoritive for any zone content. You can't integrate a caching only server into AD as it holds no zones to integrate. A caching only server is just used to resolve names to ips for clients and provides a local dns server that should be close to the user to reduce traffic. You do not want to a dns server across a slow wan link, you use this type as you don't want to increase the Administration of additional zones unless its required for the clients to access resources using an internal company domain name. For example these clients just need to resolve names on the Internet..don't create a standard secondary from a primary or a whole new DNS name, just to accomidate usage. Place a caching only as it is fast and has low admin..if you do wish to have them resolve resources using an internal company domain and do not wish to have zones local..then make the dns server a forwarder to an Authoratative dns server. Hope this sheds light. |
