Author Help I need to pass 70-216

I just passed 70-210 for my MCP in Aug 2002. Now in order to complete a minor in computer networking I have to take 70-216 or take the class. Money wise taking a collage class is not cheep. For the $900.00, they want I could take the exam like 7 times (900/125=7.2) to correct.

So people here's the problem what's the best way to go about studying for this exam.

Jumping from 70-210 to the 216 exam is a big leap. Unless you're already familiar with the 2K server taking & passing the beast as your next exam can be very challenging. However, I believe it can be done with a lot of hard work towards preparing for it.

My advice is to you if you haven't already done so set up a home network to study and practice from. You need at least two PCs, one with Server installed on it & the other Pro installed. Then I would practice on it day-in and day-out, week after week for maybe a least a couple of months or more until you're very familiar and comfortable with the various server consoles and functions. You'll need to focus on RRAS, DNS, DHCP, WINS, IIS, and some AD/GPOs. Also, and most important you need to understand IP routing and subnetting very well cuz the test will have a least a couple of questions on those subjects.

For study materials I would use the Transcender practice exam for the 216. IMHO, the practice questions are a good source of study information. Also, if you can afford it get the 2K server resource kit which is the best study guide for this exam. You can get it at bookpool.com at a 40% discount. If not you can use the online server resource kit at http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...ok/default.asp.

IMO, unless you already have a solid understanding of W2K networking you can't rush to take this test. You really need to put in a lot of study time to prepare for this exam cuz it's intimidating and the most difficult of the 2K core exams. That's why it's known as the 'beast'.

Good luck to you when you take the exam.

70216 is called the beast. i think you must take 215 and 217 before this one. or if you have lot of win network knowledge you can do your best. normally people let this until the end. i recommend you the read of posts on this forum. browse few weeks of posts and you can see how this exam is......

Hey, thank for the reality check, guess we all need to crawl before we run. I was shooting for the following a MCBDA/MCSA and thought 70-216 would be easy to tackle (plus the book is the small out score MCSE core pack) in talk to a lot of people and it been petty much the same that this test is no push over. I will look over the book is weekend and see what up.

Thank again

there are no shortcuts, especially when it comes down to the 216. My advice is don't rush it, read as many books as you can on the subject -- the best being the TCP/IP book in the resource kit -- and get as much hands on as you can setting up DNS, DHCP, RAS, RIS, Win2K as a router, etc...

exactly. i have plenty of study materials and book, and instead of putting me a finish line with rushit speed, i prefer to read and understand everything and LEARN who is the principal objetive of been certified. no?

it sure is for me! Sure I am certified, but I also have to do the job everyday in my corporate network. THe cert was great to get the job, and study the material, but that's where they stop and where hands-on experience starts...

I would agree that yes hand on should count but in this time where 9 time out of 10 the first person who see your resume is just looking for those letter after your name. It hard to not wanted to just get certified in something and worrier about learn it later.

You can't judge how difficult a test will be by how thick or how small a book is. In this case it's very misleading. IMHO, there aren't that many quality study guides out there for the 216 exam.

while it is true that certifications get your foot in the door, and employers often look for this in a resume. you also demand a certain amount of money with a long acronym trail. Sometimes it's better to not report your achievements, but have the knowhow.

Hi Yes "food on the table" is a noble cause but don't forget, you get hired to do a job and the guy/girl who hires you based on your qualifications has some right to expect you to be able to do the job. That's where practice and real study comes in and "Paper" MCSE's fail.

All the best.

Buy a book for the 70-215, read it then study 70-216 or you be like Fidel Castro in Wall street man, LOST. you wont pass the beast because if you dont know how windows 2000 server works, your doom.

Sorry to talk to you so hard but its the sad true.

Good luck.
