| Hello all,
Sorry for this difficult question but, can someone sort or classify these acronyms :
PPTP, L2TP, MPPE, PAP, SPAP, EAP, IPSec, MD5, SHA-1...
There are tons of documents using these terms but I was unable to find one clear document, filling a few pages, explaining all those RRAS-related acronyms.
Any URL, or docfile ?
Thanks, | |

Ok. i try to explain SOMETHING with my brain:
PPTP is point to point tunneling protocol. was the standard method of make vpn tunnels and use the MPPE protocol as encryption mechanism. Windows 2k support VPN using the RRAS service. You can make with win2k VPN using both PPTP and L2TP who is layer 2 tunneling protocol. L2tp is better than PPTP and have some advantages. PPTP use MPPe who is microsoft point to point encryption as encryption mechanism and l2tp donīt have such advantages. Instead, you need to use additional encryption if you use L2tp as your tuneling protocol. for example: you can use iPsec. IP sec is a security encryption mechanism to transport ip packets in a encrypting way. SO l2tp works togheter with ipsec and pptp with mppe.
MDA5, SHA-1 i donīt remember but is something like hashing routine or alghoritm and a sharing key mechanism to authenticate VPN tunnels. I see this options on the manual configuration on the hardware VPN routers.
PAP is password authentication protocol and SPAP is SHiva pass auth protocol. you can find a lot of explanation about this terms on the MOC books, the MS training kits and IN THE TRASCENDER EXAMS.

| Thank you all and especially cm2gj, sometimes you learn more in a few phrases than in an entire chapter.
Nice links you gave, too.
