Author I passed 70-216 today!

Hi everyone,

It was 12:40pm, and I was let into the exam room, with my sleeves rolled up and a glass of water I entered into the beasts ugly cave...

175 Minutes
65 Questions

Result: PASS!

It was very tough, lots of questions on DNS, WINS, RRAS (especially policies). There were only a few TCP/IP subnetting questions, but I was hoping for more because this was my strength.

I haven't had any work experience with DNS or Certificate Authorities. I've had NT4 experience with WINS & DHCP. I've used RRAS on my home network for NAT and generally playing with. In a company merger last year I had to restructure our IP addressing using CIDR so I knew a lot about that.

My main study material was the Syngress / Osborne 70-216 Study Guide. It's a massive hardback book, with test questions at the end of each chapter. The CD included with it is not worth looking at, because the video's on there have the most dull and boring voice you will ever hear.

I also had the Microsoft Readiness Review book, which I barely touched as I believe there was too many mistakes.

The MCSE Freak study guide was excellent: http://www.mcsefreak.com/subnetting.htm

Definately worth reading! Oh, and I used the Transcenders software too, which definately helped because it has lengthy explanations.

Overall, I can see why it's called the beast. I can also see why some recommend taking 70-217 first. Although I didn't, I think it would have helped.

It just goes to show that this exam is passable, and I haven't even got 'real work' experience with all the topics covered, as I work in a 250 user network.

If I hear the words 'You are a the network administrator for XYZCorp'... once more then I think my head will explode!!!!

Before I end my post, I like to recommend the following to anybody taking this exam:

  • Have a good nights sleep before the exam
  • Don't rely on brain dumps, Microsoft have got it right with this one. You really need to know 'why'
  • Setup Windows 2000 Server at home, install DNS, DHCP, RRAS to get hands on!
  • Go to the toilet before the exam (I didn't and nearly wet myself!)

Congratulations l9nux, and thanks for your tips....

I'm working hard on 216 too, but planning to take 218 1st. I'm using these:

Troubleshooting Windows 2000 Tcp/Ip
ISBN: 1928994113 (April 2000)

MCSE Windows 2000 Network Administration Study Guide (Exam 70-216)
ISBN: 0072123834

...as you can see, the Syngress book too! It's excellent and i'm using as backup the W2K TCP/IP troubleshooting book of same authors, the Shinder's.

And yes, maybe Tom Shinder has a deep voice, jejeje, but its a nice man. I had the oportunity to exchange some e-mails with him, and its a nice man, he's wife too. Ahh, Tom is MD too, did u know that?...

Congrats on the pass. I am taking this on 10/18, so I have 1 more week till my death-match with the beast. Thanks for the info, I am just cramming as much in my head as possible, while taking transcedner exams.

Great Job!!! I think 217 will be easier for you by taking it all in numerical order, 210,215,216... You now have a good understanding of DNS which is centeral to Active Directory and such, plus you got the hardest one out of the way. Take your own advice for sitting the exam on 217. It does get longish and wordy, so rest and restroom are critical. Best of luck on the next phase.

Thanks frazang... I see you've also defeated 217. Are you planning to take another exam towards your MCSE yet?

Do you know much about the CCNA? I want to work as a consultant once I gain my MCSE so I can get away from the 'office politics'. A few have told me I should go for the CCNA too?

Congrats on your pass! I used the Syngress/Osborne 70-216 Study Guide also. I didn't use the big thick heavy book though, instead I used their E-book on the Certrainer CD. (It was much lighter). Used the edit function on the interface and read everything in MS Word right there on my desk top, with the text size enlarged though! That way I could perform a lot of the excercises as I read. I just minimized and did the exercises as I went. I also highlighted all the pertinent stuff in yellow and added (pasted) needed to know items into the bulleted chapter summaries at the end, then saved my work. It made reviewing the chapters a breeze. I agree, Tom Shinder has an awful, not awesome, voice and manner of speaking, and that must have been a 1 Base T network he was on, if he was lucky, when he did those demos! Good thing I also had the LearnKey's. Aaron Spurlock and Michael Storm were just awesome!

Best of luck to you the rest of the way!

CCNA was a great follow up for me after my MCSE. I would recommend it to those that want to know a lot more about networking concepts and implementation. It's pretty much an entry level cert though, for all out network engineering you might want to go further, but for consulting it will be helpfull. Good luck!!!

I agree that the CCNA is a great cert to take after the MCSE. It also gets you out of the MS world for a while, which is a good braether imho

Thanks for the kind words. I am doing great. How about you?

I started a new website at www.NewEnglandSportsOnline.com and it's keeping me plenty busy, hence my absence from the boards lately. I am also working on another project related to IT Certs, that I cannot talk about right now, but that I do believe you guys will come to enjoy when it's out! I am so excited about it, I wish I could say more, but now is not the time... patience
