I have a win2k domain good implemented with the DNS server and SRV, everything OK. DHCP is running on the network.

I want to make a new testing domain. My doubt is if in this new server, i need to install another DNS or run dcpromo and indicate the DNs already in use.

regards
alex

That all depends. Are you using the same namespace? Is this domain going into an existing forest or is it completely separate? If you are using the same namespace then you can either point the new domain controller to the existing DNS server or make a new one. If its in another forest, then your best bet would be to make another server thats authoritative for its own namespace. If its completely separate then you will definately have to install a DNS server or use an existing one.

Regardless, if you have Active Directory then DNS is required, whether it previously existed or you go back and install it before you create the domain.

is a complete diferent namespace. is a test domain.

i know that i need dns.... i install a lot of domains and i install dns, check SRV and add PTR...

so i CAN install a new DNS and AD on the separate server.....

my doubt was if i can add additional zones to the existent DNS... for the new domain...

You can add as many zones as you want to a server, but the more you add the more performance decreases. If you are talking about hosting the zone on the other DNS server, then you should encounter no problems because thats just one zone. Just create the zone, enable dynamic updates, point the new server to the other DNS server and run DCPROMO.

Check out this link on planning DNS servers. It shows apporximately how much server memory is used by each zone, and by the number of host records.
