Today I thought I would take it easy - try this little poser ......

Q3. You implement and administer a Windows 2000 network. The network uses Windows 2000 Server computers and Windows 2000 Professional client computers. The network also has Internet Connection Sharing ENABLED.

Which statement or statements are true about this network?

A. Configuration of DNS is not allowed.

B. Configuration of DHCP is not allowed.

C. Configuration of the PPTP protocol is not allowed.

D. Configuration of Network Address Translation is not allowed.

Good Luck - see you tomorrow ..........

I would say A & B

I would go like this:
A. is true because ICS can't use DNS in order to resolve local FQDNs.

B. is true because ICS becomes "DHCP Allocator" itself and automatically assigns IP addresses strarting from 192.168.0.1

C. not true /I guess/ because ICS/NAT will be able to translate PPTP , passing PPTP down to NAT editor (PPTP uses TCP port 1723 and GRE IP Protocol ID 47).

D. is true because if you are using ICS you can't use NAT.

What I know is that if you already have a DHCP Server up and running, you usually don't us ICS, as ICS has a scale down DHCP server, which would cause havoc with the existing DHCP Server on the PDC.

I would bet on "B" - configuration of DHCP not allowed.

I reckon A,B,D are correct statements as explained by spets.

Correct Answers: A and B

A and B Correct: You should not use the Internet connection sharing feature on a network with other Windows 2000 Server domain controllers, DHCP servers, DNS servers, gateways, or systems that are configured for static IP.

C. Incorrect: The PPTP protocol and Network Address Translation services are allowed on this computer.

D. Incorrect: Internet Connection Sharing is a service used to connect a small office or home office network to the Internet. Each computer on the network can share one connection to the Internet. Enabling this service also provides network address translation, addressing, and name resolution services on the network. For this reason, you are not allowed to configure DNS on the network. When using Internet Connection Sharing, users are configured to automatically obtain an IP address.

Note: To use Internet Connection Sharing, you must configure two connections. First, the computer with ICS enabled must have a connection to the Internet. Second, the computer with ICS enabled must have a LAN adapter connection to the other computers on the network. Services you provide on the network must be configured so that Internet users that access the network can access these services.

When ICS connection sharing is enabled, the computer with the LAN adapter is given a new static IP address configuration. For this reason, TCP/IP connections on the network are lost. These connections must be re-established.
