| Hi,
I just passed 217 and am now moving on to 216. It all looks Greek to me but I have to start somewhere. I have Exam Cram, a couple of study guides, lots of hands on and lots of questions for this forum.
Here it goes with the first one.
You are running IAS to connect to the internet you set up network monitor to monitor all traffic but on a diferent subnet from the IAS. Will network monitor be able to monitor all packets sent and recieved on both segments?
I can't try it out because I only have one segment here.

| Oh and this might be a clue. In one study guide it states (unclearly) that:
"Network Monitor in Windows 2000 is only a limited edition which only captures frames between the host (and what) on other computers, not all the frames present on the network segment." | |
|
| There are two limitations with the version of Network Monitor that comes with W2k Server, compared to the one that comes with SMS.
1) It will only see frames to or from itself (that includes all broadcasts and relevant multicasts).
2) It does not have the capability to connect to an agent on another subnet to see frames there.
It's the first limitation that's described in your second post.
It's the second limitation that prevents you from monitoring anything on the same segment as IAS.
To overcome the second limitation you need the SMS version of Network Monitor, and you need to install a Network Monitor agent on all subnets you want to monitor.

| Plain words, well spoken Terje.
I looked hard for an answer but now it falls into place.
So Net Monitor only sees packet sent to or from itself on the same subnet. Correct?

That's true for the version that comes with W2k.
The version that comes with SMS can see all traffic on the subnet (including traffic between two other hosts). Additionally, with the help of the Network Monitor Agent, this version of Network Monitor can also connect to and listen to traffic on selected other subnets.
