Hi

I am presently half way through my Windows MCSE2000 and have come accross some puzzling questions. I have talked to certain people, I am told you may be able to assist with my problems. If so I would be most greatful. Here goes.

DNS:- If you set up DNS, how should clients connect to network resources. I assume when you double click network neighbourhood, this is a broadcast and is by netbios resolution. As such then perusing via this manner requires Wins name service solution. Is this correct? If this does hold true, then am I correct in stating network neighbourhood browsing does not benefit by using DNS. In other words, network neighbourhood browsing is via netbios name to IP address and as such would not use Domain name resolution. Taking this in context, I setup DNS on a server and enroled client systems under windows 2000 server and windows 98 clients.

Refering back to my question, how should clients connect using DNS resolution. I automatically thought you would use a web browser entering in the address bar \\dnsname\domain\resource where the dnsname is the client name registered with the dns server. The domain is the domain, and the resource is the resource on that system ie. drive c. However, this does not appear to work!

If I enter the UNC, \\server\resource is this OK as this does not appear to follow a DNS structure ie requesting a resource based upon where it is in the domain tree. Take for example my dns name is Steve and I am in a domain named sales.test.com and I want to connect to the c drive of dns name Mark in sample.admin.sales.test.com. In networkneighbourhood would all these domains appear at the same level? and why does the UNC not require \\mark\sample.admin.sales.test\c to connect if this is to connect by DNS.

Oh dear I am confused. Can you help!

Additionally, is it possible to import from say Excel, a group of users direct in NT4 user manager or into win2000 server. If so is it also possible to automate home directory settings for each user giving each user access only to their directory. Also taking this further is it also possible on logon to map that user direct to their home directory and not to some top level parent directory?

Well, netbios of tcp/ip performs this action in a TCP/IP-DNS network.

As far as the importing of users, that I cannot help you with. Sorry. Good question though. There are some bright minds here so I will let the experts field this question.

Yes you can import users from an Excel document. We did it in class a while back and it worked wonderfully. I can't remember for the life of me what the DOS based command is to do it. I thought I saw it in the help files somewhere. As for mapping users home directories, you can specify that in the user's properties. Or you can specify a login script to do the same thing.
