There are 15 User and 1 Old as computer Serving as Server. For Mortgage CO customer database.
Now the network is in WorkGroup
and no one has passwords to log on network
I would like to have better control and security...
Any suggestion for Server

and also use that as proxy for internet
to controll web sites and downloads...
Also want to add virus protection and adware

why would you need ccnp to pull cables
why would you need mcse to admin a workgroup of 15.
anyway...
what to do what to do...
get a new box, put win2k server
setup a domain, create users,
set rights, file printers
get cd burner to burn customer files,
but you will find that in the end, a company that size will resent having *security* restricted and will find it more annoying and interfer with business if files are not readily accessible and require YOU to allow them access to it.
you need to do more than WISH for more control, you have to convince them to have control over data, again, company that size, ppl will find it more annoying than beneficial to have to log in and none of them will practice good computing anyway.
security, slap a decent firewall somewhere, fact of them matter is internally, useless to secure it unless you can convince the boss to be draconian, otherwise, password will be written on sticky and no one will care except to complain about how it inconveniences them.
edit: what kind of software do they use? mortage comapnies... soem custom specialized software for data entry?
you build your system to be compatible with whatever packages they are using for their business... kind of hard to imagine apps like that not having any control as it is being suggested here...

| CCNP is for my Fulltime Job -
Network Analyst for AT&T Goverment Solutions
NOC assistant manager
We maintain and watch Goverment Network
Routers, HUBS, Switches, ESU/CSU Muxs,DACS and other telecom eqpt thats what CCNP is for
I need MCSE to admin 15 computers because
If I had it I wouldn't be asking simple questions
That I would know if I had taken and passsed it...
But anway!
I was thinking of have 15 computers going thru server for proxy, Right Now they all are homerun to hub then to router/swicth(4port) to DSL MODEM....
Do i need particular server
or can I just use o good pc as server
Any links/help on set up domain/users/permission/proxy/ etc..

| technet.microsoft.com
select from menu
win2k server
ISA server
these things cost money, prolly 1+ k for 15 users... hard to justify, but these are things you can look around.
technet is to ppl who work on microsoft stuff as cisco documentation is to cisco professional, get to know the site well.
mcse's curriculum won't teach you anything about administrating it, youc an admin it without it with targetted study of what you specifically need to do the job.
read technet, read how to, read the various documentation on deployment, maintainance, etc etc.
if you want to get books to know how to do this, stay away from certification books anyway
microsoft resource kit (free online at technet)
microsoft win2k administrators companion (have to buy) are all better books to learn.

| You only have 15 people and setting up a win2k domain is really really really unnecessary, costly and mighty overkill. Also most likely the database is a filemakerPRO, Excel or Access or may even be developed with the punch cards If you want to use this oppertunity to study for the MCSE, good luck!
Keep the workgroup as it is. If all the workstations are windows 2000/9x (hopefully not a windows 3.1 workgroup), everyone may have their own login for their workstations. Setup a share to the database workstation from each workstation and let them use it. Use an old machine with win2k server or wks to connect to the ISP and setup the NAT or ICS on it. This should give some control of proxying. Install the antivirus program in each of the 15 workstations. Not knowing your LAN infrastructure, I can't give you any further hint.
BTW, getting a paper MCSE doesn't mean someone can setup a viable win2k network. This is a misconception and, sadly, MCSEs with the real world experience are getting screwed often. You need experience working with an actuall windows network. Since you have experience and Cisco certi., I am sure you know what do you read on the paper is not always true in the real world.
